Program Overview
- Program Description:
- The Arabic Overseas Program (AOP) is an 8-week, summer immersion porgam in Alexandria, Egypt. Designed for intermediate speakers of Arabic, the program is tailored to the individual needs of each participant and features regular excursions in and around Alexandria.
Participants live in dormitory housing with Egyptian roommates, providing access to authentic, contemporary language in an informal setting. Three meals per day are provided on campus.
Participants of the Arabic Overseas Program (AOP) receive 20 hours per week of in-class Arabic instruction. Topics covered typically include literature, history, and current events. All classes are conducted in Arabic by host-institution faculty with extensive experience teaching foreign students. Participants earn between eight and ten U.S. credit hours through Bryn Mawr College during the summer program. To aid cultural integration and support academic learning, participants meet with conversational partners and participate on frequent cultural excursions. Each week participants receive four hours of tutoring; excursions range from day-trips around Alexandria to regional overnight trips.
For more than 35 years, American Councils has operated comprehensive language immersion programs for thousands of students and scholars. Participants greatly benefit from individual attention in our small classes and from interaction with host faculty who have extensive experience in second language acquisition. In addition to classroom learning, American Councils emphasizes language immersion outside of the academic program through cultural excursions, discussion groups, and extracurricular activities.
