Program Overview

Program Description:

The African Languages Initiative (AFLI) is designed to increase the number of Boren Scholars and Fellows engaged in the study of critical African languages, and ultimately, to help meet the critical need for specialists in a range of academic and professional fields who can operate effectively in these languages. The languages targeted through this program currently are French/Wolof, Portuguese, and Swahili.

The regional experience will be enhanced through home stays, peer tutoring, content courses focusing on culture, history, politics, etc., excursions, and short term internships or service learning opportunities. Language proficiency will be tested at the end of the semester, with the goal of increasing at least one ILR level.

The program aims to enable participants to achieve strong linguistic skills in French/Portuguese/Swahili while gaining broad regional and cultural experience in their chosen region.

Setting Description:

AFLI is hosted in Dakar, Senegal (French/Wolof); Maputo, Mozambique (Portuguese); and Zanzibar, Tanzania (Swahili). Students are immersed in the culture of each region through home stays and excursions.

Cost:

Dependent on Boren funding; up to $10,485. This amount covers university tuition for one term, fees and registration; round-trip travel from participants’ hometown to their country and back; a visa; overseas insurance covering health, emergency and medical evacuation; and the estimated costs of housing, food, and local transportation.
