Program Overview
- Program Description:
- The Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) provides intensive group language-study for the semester, academic year or summer. Students with two years of college-level Russian-language instruction are eligible to apply.
The program provides fifteen to twenty hours per week of in-class instruction in Russian grammar, phonetics, conversation, and cultural studies; U.S. academic credit is available. Academic program also provides local excursions, volunteer and internship opportunities, peer tutors, and Russian-American discussion clubs.
For more than 35 years, American Councils has offered comprehensive language immersion programs in Russia for thousands of students and scholars. Participants greatly benefit from individual attention in our small classes and from interaction with host faculty who have extensive experience in second language acquisition. In addition to classroom learning, American Councils emphasizes language immersion outside of the academic program through: - volunteer opportunities at sites such as local public schools, charity organizations, and international NGOs; - cultural excursions, discussion groups, and extracurricular activities; and - life with Russian host-families where they can become fully immersed in the language, culture and cuisine of Russia. All participants receive undergraduate- or graduate-level academic credit through Bryn Mawr College.
- Setting Description:
- A full-time U.S. resident director oversees the academic and cultural programs and assists participants in academic, administrative, and personal matters. Students may live with Russian host families or in university dormitories. The program offers three locations: Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Valdimir.

- Summer in Moscow12/07/16
I learned so much during my two months in Moscow studying with American Council's RLASP program. My Russian improved unbelievably - I used to be skeptically about people saying they learned a language by living in a country, but not anymore. Immersion
is amazing. I learned so much from my host family, who gave me a comfortable place to practice my spoken Russian. The teachers who work with the program are wonderful, knowlegable experts who have a lot of experience teaching American students, and I learned valuable nuances of Russian grammar from them (not to mention endless vocabulary words). RLASP also has amazing cultural excursions - there's nothing quite like learning history where it happened! But even with all the classes and excursions, I had a lot of time to explore Moscow and get to know life in Russia. The long summer days helped, and there's always something going on in Moscow. I think we found a different festival every week! All in all, my experience this summer was one of the best in my life, and I'd go back tomorrow if I could!
