What is Medical Coding?
Medical coding goes way back to the 17th century in London, when alphanumeric codes were used to notate illnesses and fatalities among the city’s population. Several hundred years later, coding systems had been developed for tracking disease, medicine, and mortality rates and were implemented internationally. The Bertillon Classification, created nearly 140 years ago, is the foundation for medical coding today. Current Procedural Terminology, International Classification of Diseases, and Medical Data Classifications are updated by the World Health Organization and used around the world.
