Program Description:
We want to help you learn the theory and skills of management, leadership, human resources, policy design, financial administration, strategic planning, marketing, funding and decision-making in non-profit groups. The Learning Units are as follows: Introduction to Non Profit Management Social Justice: a Context for Management Leadership for Non Profit Organisations Marketing for Non Profit Organisations Fund-Raising for Non Profit Organisations Human Resource Management for Non Profit Organisations Spirituality in the Workplace Law & Voluntary Organisations Strategic Planning & Managing Change for Non Profit Organisations Social Entrepreneurship Policy Design & Analysis Project Management Research Methods Research Seminars Research Project Each unit is a module in length, that is, twenty four hours of class time and approximately fifty hours of student study. There are five shorter units on practical topics necessary for contemporary management: Basic Accounting for Non Profit Organisations (half module) Communications for Non Profit Organisations (half module) Public Relations and Advocacy for Non Profit Organizations (half module) Information Technology for Non Profit Organisations (half module) Financial Management for Non Profit Organisations (half module) We relate the theory and practice of voluntary and community management to your own organisations, or an organisation with which you are sufficiently familiar. You can reflect on your own experience as a manager or employee or volunteer in the community and voluntary sector, set it alongside theory or best practice as you learn it, and plan for change, both in your place of work and in your own career. Our approach is inter-disciplinary and interactive, using an adult model of learning. Lectures are an important element but you will be involved, as well, in case studies, group presentation, multi-media, research and in significant reflection on these experiences. You will prepare an individual research project or dissertation is presented for August of your final year.
