Akita is located in the northwestern region of Honshu, main island of Japan, on the Sea of Japan. It is 50 minutes by plane from Tokyo and famous for its festivals, including Kanto, one of the three major festivals in northern Japan, Kakunodate (a Samurai town of the 17th-century), and Shirakami, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Industries in Akita have traditionally centered around rice-farming, forestry, and mining.
