Iceland is a world apart from the normal, filled with rugged coastlines, glaciers, hot springs, geysers, volcanoes, and lava deserts. The resilient culture that has developed in this landscape has a rich history: its parliament, the Althin, is the oldest in the world, dating back nearly 1,000 years... Choir, photography, and sports are the most common activities offered in school. Although not all offered activities are listed so it doesn't specifically mean that it isn't offered! The grading system is slightly different compared to the typical letter grading used in the U.S. take a look at the list below to see how the students in Iceland are graded. Outstanding: 9-10 Good: 7-8 Average: 6 Poor: 5 Failing: 0-4

Colleges recommend high school study abroad experiences - as these programs provide the opportunity to develop confidence and self-reliance before pursuing higher education. In addition, after exploring the world you may have a clearer vision of what you'd like to study in college. As a result, you may spend less time switching majors, which means you'll save time and money. An exchange program also boosts college applications and gives you an immediate advantage when applying for scholarships.

Plus, the language skills you develop on an AFS program might exempt you from required language courses, thus enabling you to finish college sooner. Some students have received as much as 18 hours language credit-almost enough to provide a minor in language and a huge financial savings when you figure the cost of credits.
Setting Description:
While in Iceland, you'll receive training tapes and classes during the school year to help you learn Icelandic. Most Icelanders can speak English, so they'll help you learn the language. You'll also learn that despite its name and location, Iceland's climate is actually mild because of the warming effects of the Gulf Stream. Icelanders enjoy fishing, swimming in hot springs, soccer, skiing, and horseback riding.
