Program Overview

Program Description:
AFS (formerly the American Field Service) is a leader in intercultural learning and offers international exchange programs in more than 40 countries around the world. We've been exchanging students throughout the world for 60 years. That is six decades of history and experience in international education with an exemplary record of safety, security, and service to students, parents, and educators.

AFS Mission: AFS-USA works toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.

AFS offers year, semester, and summer programs to destinations throughout Chile. AFS is currently offering hundreds of scholarships for students flexible with their country choice and ready for an adventure.

Discover the southernmost country of the world or, as Pablo Neruda (Chilean Nobel Prize Winner) once wrote, the \"country made for poets.\" From flamingos inhabiting the world's driest desert in northern Chile to penguin colonies that call the southern Patagonia region home, the variety of Chile's natural wonders will enchant you... All students are obligated to participate in two extra curricular activities. Some of the activities offered are sports, social services, arts, and scouts. Although, if the activity isn't mentioned it doesn't specifically mean that it doesn't exist. There are plenty of other activities you can participate in. The grading system in Chile is a little different compared to the letter grading system in a typical U.S. high school. Take a look below to see how Chile grades their students. Outstanding: 7 Good: 6 Average: 5 poor: 4 Failing: -4

Colleges recommend high school study abroad experiences - as these programs provide the opportunity to develop confidence and self-reliance before pursuing higher education. In addition, after exploring the world you may have a clearer vision of what you'd like to study in college. As a result, you may spend less time switching majors, which means you'll save time and money. An exchange program also boosts college applications and gives you an immediate advantage when applying for scholarships.

Plus, the language skills you develop on an AFS program might exempt you from required language courses, thus enabling you to finish college sooner. Some students have received as much as 18 hours language credit-almost enough to provide a minor in language and a huge financial savings when you figure the cost of credits.
Setting Description:
You'll experience the beauty and the towering presence of the Andes as you arrive in Santiago, the capital and largest city in Chile. Chile is renowned for its idyllic Lake District, dotted with snow-capped volcanoes and crystalline lakes along half its Pacific coast. Chileans enjoy family-centered activities and the natural beauty that surrounds them. You will learn about Chilean culture by sharing your host family's special traditions as they practice the customs and traditions of their various ethnic groups. Local traditions are best reflected in the many festivals that take place around the country, such as the Fiestas Patrias (Independence Day). Many Chileans also enjoy a wide range of theater and outdoor festival performances. Memories are waiting to be made as you sit in an outdoor cafe, munch on empanadas, and get to know your new friends.
