Program Overview

Program Description:
The Global Scholars Programme (GSP) is a three-week summer experience for a select group of international secondary school students, which takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa. GSP attracts some of the brightest, most dynamic young leaders from across the globe and emphasises leadership skills, exposure to community service, immersion in the local culture of South Africa and building a powerful network of fellow leaders across the globe. Participants build lasting friendships with peers from all over the world, impact communities, and gain valuable leadership skills. The GSP is an exceptional opportunity for high school students to practice their leadership skills in a global context, and to build a global network with other young leaders. In 2012 participants hailed from 11 African countries as well as countries outside of the continent, including Bermuda, Burma, France, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Modelled after African Leadership Academy’s innovative curricula in Leadership and Entrepreneurship, the Global Scholars Program deeply engages participants in issues that significantly affect Africa’s future. Participants identify and develop innovative solutions to challenging problems—and learn how to implement these solutions. GSP participants put their leadership development and teamwork skills to the test with thought-provoking activities and exercises GSP participants will form teams that seek to develop an innovative solution to a pressing challenge in a local community. They also practice leadership by working in social ventures in the Johannesburg community, and learn from ‘fireside chats’ with prominent entrepreneurial leaders in South Africa.

GSP Participants discover the history, beauty, diversity, and energy that is Africa by spending nineteen days on the ALA in Johannesburg. Through African Studies discussions, excursion to the Apartheid Museum, and exploration of the Cradle of Humankind and Pilanesberg National Park, GSP’ers are exposed to Africa in ways never before imagined. Participants build a powerful network of friends and leaders from across Africa and beyond, and learn from outstanding leaders and entrepreneurs at the forefront of the critical issues facing the continent today.
