Program Overview

Program Description:

French craftsmanship is known worldwide: from culinary confections to fashion and design, these fields can take a lifetime to master. APA Paris: Gap Year takes an inside look at these artisans, by learning the history, culture, and vocabulary of a series of trades through classroom and on-site learning.

In addition, students will leave Paris with improved French language skills and a better understanding of French civics and art history. 


At the beginning of the term, for three weeks, students only follow one Intensive French Language course (alternating language courses (grammar, vocabulary, and culture) and oral and written workshops). The fourth week commences with three courses, listed below. Students continue their French practice with 90-minute individual support sessions each week.

  • Art History: Painting, Sculpture in France in the 19th Century
    • Explore an exceptional period and conclude with a visit of Monet's gardens in Giverny
  • Political Science: France Today
    • Instruction and site visits
  • Business French: An Economy of Creation: Discovering the French Savoir-Faire
    • Steeped in tradition, discover the artisanal fields for which France is recognized.  Learn the vocabulary and specific culture surrounding these sectors:
      • Fashion, perfume, leather goods, shoemakers, and tailors; Sustainable and eco-friendly fashion
      • Cuisine: chocolatier, pastry chef and baker
      • Wine: from the producer to the winemaker to the sommelier
      • Design / Art Gallery
    • Gain general professional vocabulary to be used in a business setting
    • Organized visits to workshops, laboratories, or centers for these “Made in France” professions

All courses are taught in French and receive four credit hours. At the end of the program, students receive a transcript from APA so that they may transfer the credit towards an undergraduate degree.

The following events and excursions are included:

  • Visits of Paris neighborhoods during orientation
  • 4 cultural events: examples include theater, concert, dance
  • Châteaux of the Loire Valley weekend excursion
  • Day trip to Versailles


Choice of student residence or homestay. Both options provide private bedrooms, linens, weekly laundry, daily breakfast, and five dinners per week. Homestay participants can choose to receive three dinners per week instead.

The ideal APA Paris: Gap Year student

  • 18 years old, minimum
  • French language level of at least B1
  • University students taking a leave of absence are welcome
  • No visa required for US passport holders
Setting Description:
APA Paris is located in the 14th arrondissement of the French capital city of Paris. Less than a five-minute walk from the metro, APA is situated on the idyllic, cobblestone street of Villa d'Alésia. In between class, students often will grab a sandwich from the boulangerie around the corner and picnic in the park across the street.
Fees include tuition for four courses, cultural activities and excursions, and housing. For up-to-date fees, visit the APA website.
