Your Essential Guide to Applying for a U.S. Passport

If you still need a passport, applying for one well before your planned departure is essential. Note that “well in advance” in this case means more than just two months before you leave—aim for eight to ten months ahead. Passport processing can take anywhere from six weeks to two months, depending on various factors.

You’ll need a passport for many steps of your study abroad preparation, such as booking flights and applying for visas. Additionally, if you already have a passport, ensure it remains valid for at least six to twelve months beyond your return date from studying abroad.

For more details on requirements such as proof of U.S. citizenship, personal identification, and photo specifications, visit the U.S. Department of State’s official website.

Below are the seven steps you should follow to apply for a U.S. passport, according to the U.S. Department of State:

*Note that application processes vary by country, so be sure to check your home country’s requirements on your government’s website.

Step 1: Complete and Submit Form DS-11
Start by filling out Form DS-11. While you can download the form online, you must submit it in person. Do not sign the form until instructed to do so by a passport acceptance agent. You must apply in person if this is your first U.S. passport, if you’re under 16, or if your previous passport was issued before your 16th birthday.

Step 2: Submit Proof of U.S. Citizenship

This includes one of the following:

  • A previously issued, undamaged U.S. passport
  • A certified birth certificate from the city, county, or state
  • A Consular Report of Birth Abroad
  • A Naturalization Certificate
  • A Certificate of Citizenship

These must be original or certified replacement copies with the official seal or stamp from the office that issued them. You must also provide a photocopy of the front and back of this document.

Step 3: Present Identification

When applying, bring valid identification, such as:

  • A previously issued, undamaged U.S. passport
  • A Naturalization Certificate
  • A valid driver’s license
  • A current government ID (city, state, or federal)
  • A current military ID (for military members and dependents)

Make sure to bring the physical copy, as well as a photocopy as detailed in the next step.

Step 4: Submit a Photocopy of Your Identification
Make sure to submit a photocopy of the ID you presented. It should be in black and white, on a single side of an 8.5 x 11 inch piece of paper.

Step 5: Pay the Application Fee
Fees vary depending on the type of passport and how quickly you need it processed. The application and acceptance fee for a passport book and card is $195, and the expedition fee is typically an additional $60. For more detailed information on costs, refer to the official U.S. Department of State passport fees guide.

Step 6: Provide a Passport Photo
You can have your passport photo taken at most stores with a photo counter (like drugstores and post offices), and likely at the location where you submit your application. There are certain requirements for the photo:

  • The photo must be in color and taken within the last 6 months.
  • The photo should be clear, unedited, and taken by someone else (not a selfie).
  • If you wear glasses, they should be removed.
  • The background of the photo should be white or off-white and free of shadows, textures, and patterns.
  • You must have a neutral expression or natural smile.

Step 7: Pay the Application Fee

You will need to pay both the application fee and the execution (acceptance) fee. Current prices for adults applying for a passport book are:

  • Application fee: $130-$160
  • Execution fee: $35
  • Optional expedited processing: $60

It is very important that you do not combine fees into one check. Accepted payment methods depend on where you apply. You can check the U.S. Department of State’s fee chart on their website for more details.
