space Summer Study 2007 With a Special Shakespeare Course

Because of the highly individual nature of the one-on-one tutorial system, students may choose to study almost any academic subject at very flexible times during the summer period (May 15 to August 30).

Students who choose the six-week period from May 15 to June 28 will have the benefit of the last five weeks of the FULL Trinity Term with its many extra-curricular activities. WISC recommends this period.

Students will have the normal privileges in Oxford Colleges of Associate Students and may use all student facilities which are open in the summer period (dining halls and libraries may be closed for certain periods but other libraries will be open). After June 20 (the end of Trinity Term) there will be few British students and no extra curricular activities but there are many students in Summer schools in Oxford.

So far as we know, WISC (and its related college programs) is the only summer school in Oxford (with the exception of the University of Georgia) that offers tutorial courses - all the other summer schools have lecture courses, with a limited choice of subjects. This is also the only summer program in which students may study in part of the Trinity Term.

WISC also offers a special course in Shakespeare Studies. Students may study in a tutorial course in a five-week section from May 15 through June 20. This course will include lectures by Oxford and international scholars and at least three Shakespeare plays in Stratford, in Oxford or at London's Globe Theatre. Students who wish to do so, could extend their tutorial course to six (or more) weeks.

Please telephone or email our office in Washington for more detailed information about these special courses and the summer tutorial program in which almost any advanced academic subject may be studied in a tailor-made course.

"My tutors were helpful and accessible. We were really part of [our college] and not just in Oxford on a US program." AG, Dartmouth College

Students may study in a tutorial course for a minimum of four weeks (four US semester credits). Students studying in eight weeks or more could enrol in two tutorial courses.

The beginning (arrival) dates for the Summer term (students will always arrive on a Tuesday) are: May 15, May 29, June 12, June 26, July 10, July 24, August 7 or 21.

"Coming here as a one-year student through WISC changed my life. I returned a year later and I have been working toward a graduate degree in English at Oriel College." GL, Trinity College, CT

The fees in 2007 (including Oxford College fees, library fees, tuition, educational tours and single-room housing with British students, barring last-minute withdrawals) are $5,300 for four weeks, $7,000 for six weeks, $8,600 for eight weeks, $11,200 for ten weeks or $12,900 for twelve weeks (equivalent to one full term in Oxford for Associate Students).

The fees for the special Shakespeare course (including three plays) are $5,200 for five weeks. There is always a $300 damage/security deposit.

Summer Students will be welcomed by their Oxford Colleges (which may be different from those with whom we work in three terms) as Associate Students and will not be academically supervised by them. Students must secure credit approval, based upon Oxford tutors' academic reports, from their US home colleges in the usual way. Students may receive a transcript from an accredited private US university, the University of the Pacific.
