San Salvador Island, Oceanography Practicum

Program Description: This two-week program is designed for biology, earth sciences, and geology majors as a practical first-hand learning experience and includes fieldwork in biology or geology in a tropical marine setting. It combines field excursions, laboratory workshops, and lectures on the interrelationships of organisms and carbonate sediments and the ecology of benthic communities. The site is the College Center of the Community College of the Finger Lakes' San Salvador campus. Environments, present and past, to be studied by snorkeling and walking include beach, intertidal, coral reef, and associated shallow water habitats. Studies include evening lectures and an independent research project. This is considered a fall semester course registration.

Program Description: Winter Down Under, hosted by the University of Queensland, is a designed for students who wish to become acquainted with Australian life during the winter intersession through a course entitled "Cultural Environment of Business: Focus on Australia." The goal is to provide, in a relatively short time, a comprehensive exposure to Australia, its people, its institutions, and its diverse culture. Site visits will be made to various Australian business organizations to enhance the student's learning experience and gain knowledge about doing business in the Pacific Rim. While in Brisbane, students will also participate in lectures and guest speakers covering a wide variety of fields, in an effort to introduce them to Australian culture and society.

Program Description: This uniquely designed winter field studies program was set up to introduce students to the scientific method of studying the variety of different ecosystems, land forms, waterways and wildlife in Costa Rica. Students stay at working field stations and lodges throughout Costa Rica. They participate in local projects, conduct their own research, and meet with local researchers and conservationists. Local naturalists provide lectures on topics such as tropical biology, botany, ecotourism, environmental ethics, geology, rainforest ecology, and others.

Program Description: During two weeks in January participants will read (in English) selected works of Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Tolstoy, and then visit residences and museums dedicated to them and their work. Theater and cultural performances are a part of the schedule. The course is supplemented with lectures in English by local professors noted for their expertise on these authors. In addition to the half day of lectures and discussions, the group will have tours of the highlights in each of these cities. A knowledge of Russian is not required.

Program Description: This 2-week program begins with a preparatory distance learning tutorial for those outside the Capital District. The tutorial focuses on British policing and the justice system of England, with an emphasis on community policing. Students choose from among the central concerns of community policing: domestic violence, public order, and the patrol function. Each student develops a research project supervised by an Empire State College mentor. The research project is completed in the United States after the field study and research in the United Kingdom. While in Surrey, students study with practitioners from the Police Federation of England and Wales.

London Theatre Seminar

Program Description: Students get to know the historical, cultural, and creative traditions of British theater as they attend and then discuss six plays that offer unique insight into those traditions. This two-week seminar is provides access to the best available performances at both the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as other interesting works in the West End, Fringe, and experimental theaters. Trips are planned outside the city as well, to Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon (Shakespeare's birthplace), Camden Lock, Bath, and other informal local visits. There are also walking tours of London's world-famous parks.

London Art Seminar

Program Description: This two-week program lets students explore the intellectual and creative traditions of visual arts, from a distinctly British social, cultural, and historic perspective. Features behind-the-scenes museum workshops at the Tate and National Portrait Gallery, and special viewings of original Turner watercolors and Rembrandt etchings at British Museum. Students attend exhibitions in the White Chapel Gallery of Contemporary Art and observe art classes at several primary and secondary schools. Program includes informal tours of Dulwich College Picture Gallery and Horniman Museum, the National Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the William Morris Gallery.

Nature and Functions of Law (London, Brussels)

Program Description: While in London and Brussels, students study the origins and evolution of American law. Our legal institutions and judicial systems are examined and contemporary legal issues are explored. Students learn to appreciate how law helps us to resolve our conflicts and address our problems through various legal procedures. This course does not focus on specific laws and rules, but rather on understanding the nature of law, how it affects us, and what its limitations are. Instruction is conducted at various sites in London, including Parliament, the Law Courts, the London Stock Exchange, and other locations in order to provide the student with a glimpse of the past. Visitation to the European Parliament and the United Nations in Brussels, Belgium provides an insight into the future of the emerging European community.

Student Teaching Abroad

Program Description: Student Teaching Abroad (STA) is a program administered by SUNY Potsdam in cooperation with Moorhead State University and the University of Minnesota to offer future teachers the opportunity of student teaching internationally in over 30 countries (Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East). Most participants are assigned to independent international schools with English as the medium of instruction, but some with special language qualifications are assigned to national schools where the instruction is in a second language. Others are assigned to public schools if English is the medium of instruction. An effort is made to place the students in geographical areas that will particularly enrich their academic backgrounds, serve their special interests, and expand their cultural horizons.

Program Description: Before traveling to North Africa, students will complete assignments on the history of nations of the Maghreb region, with particular emphasis on Morocco and Tunisia, through its periods of Berber and Bedouin cultures, the Roman presence, the arrival of Islam, various dynasties, the French protectorate, independence movements, and finally on to modern times. Implicit in this will be a study of languages and dialects, music, folklore, and religions. Then off to Tunisia and Morocco!

Participants are matched with host organizations and agencies on the basis of their interests and skills.
