Program Description: This month-long program combines city stays and outback camping. Students travel from Sydney to the tablelands of New South Wales, on to the deserts and billabongs of North and Central Australia, completing the journey in North Queensland at the rainforest and Great Barrier Reef. This program is ideal for students and teachers interested in learning about the natural and cultural environments of Australia, including strategies of instruction in interdisciplinary environmental education. Students learn methods for interpreting national parks and other outdoor sites for the purpose of teaching the value of bio-diversity. Program Description: From late May through June, students study the coastal ecosystems and human associations near two oceans of Costa Rica. Students also receive lectures on the study of coral reefs, intertidal, nearshore, and littoral habitat types for their biological diversity. Students come to understand man's relationship to these ecotypes and the influences of ocean and sea properties (i.e. sediments, climate, food resources, and archaeological artifacts of indigenous peoples). Emphasis of lectures will be on discovering what scientists do in Oceanology.

Program Description: This program aims to dispel many of the negative stereotypes about Arabs found in American popular culture. Participants enroll in two, three-credit courses entitled Middle East Society and Jordan and Syria in Comparative Perspective and an independent study course that draws material from lectures, field trips, and interpersonal experiences. There is also a series of colloquial (Syrian) Arabic lessons. In addition, participants are paired with students from the Damascus University for an ongoing exchange of ideas and information. No previous knowledge of Arabic required.

Program Description: During this seven-week program (late June to mid-August), students live and work in an African community, participating in its daily life. Group-oriented cultural exchange and community development projects are supervised by OCA in conjunction with local, regional, or national community development organizations. Projects typically involve physical labor using indigenous resources. Academic credit for an orientation course in African history and culture is supervised by SUNY Potsdam. Although the language of instruction will be either English or French, assignments in Portuguese are occasionally available. Living standards are consistent with local standards. A personal interview is highly recommended and may be arranged at the home institution.

Program Description: Participants spend two to four weeks during July living with a Venezuelan family and studying at the VENUSA Institute in Mérida. One pedagogy class is combined with a specially designed class entitled Spanish Grammar and Conversation for Teachers. Field trips to educational institutions are included. A professional exchange with local Venezuelan teachers is also available. Students can earn three graduate credits per two week session and may enroll in one or both sessions.
Eligibility Requirements: Undergraduate credit: B.A. degree in language other than own; intermediate-level proficiency in Spanish generally 4 semesters of college level Spanish or the equivalent. Graduate credit: B.A. degree in Spanish and should be teaching or planning to teach Spanish; applicants holding a B.A. degree in discipline other than Spanish must have completed at least 2 upper-level undergraduate courses in Spanish.
