Program Description: This month-long program combines city stays and outback camping. Students travel from Sydney to the tablelands of New South Wales, on to the deserts and billabongs of North and Central Australia, completing the journey in North Queensland at the rainforest and Great Barrier Reef. This program is ideal for students and teachers interested in learning about the natural and cultural environments of Australia, including strategies of instruction in interdisciplinary environmental education. Students learn methods for interpreting national parks and other outdoor sites for the purpose of teaching the value of bio-diversity. Students also receive lectures on the study of coral reefs, intertidal, nearshore, and littoral habitat types for their biological diversity. Students come to understand man's relationship to these ecotypes and the influences of ocean and sea properties (i.e. sediments, climate, food resources, and archaeological artifacts of indigenous peoples). Emphasis of lectures will be on discovering what scientists do in Oceanology.

Program Description: During this seven-week program (late June to mid-August), students live and work in an African community, participating in its daily life. Group-oriented cultural exchange and community development projects are supervised by OCA in conjunction with local, regional, or national community development organizations. Projects typically involve physical labor using indigenous resources. Academic credit for an orientation course in African history and culture is supervised by SUNY Potsdam. Although the language of instruction will be either English or French, assignments in Portuguese are occasionally available. Living standards are consistent with local standards.
