Program Description: Direct enrollment at the University of Pau and Pays de l'Adour for students with serious academic goals. Admission to the program requires an advanced level of French, sufficient to follow instruction in regular university classes. Intensive language instruction only at the intermediate and advanced levels is available through the Course for Foreign Students. Fields of study include Basque, earth science, economics, geography, health, humanities, history, information technology, language, law, literature, math, music, natural and physical sciences, philosophy, and teaching French as a second language.

Program Description: Direct enrollment program in former East Germany, the historic capital of the Prussian kings and site of the signing of the Peace Treaty in 1945. There are three campuses, one amid architectural masterpieces - the royal palaces of park Sans Souci. Students enroll directly into regular university classes. Intensive German language program available before, as well as during, semester. Fields of study include architecture, computer science, ecology, history, humanities, information technology, interior design, language study, literature, math, music, natural and physical sciences, philosophy, religion, and social sciences. Fall semesters run from October to December or October to March; spring semesters run from March to July or April to July. Students are housed in dormitories.

Program Description: In a singular position at the crossroad of cultures, Liverpool is a stimulating and exciting city in which to study. Exploring the city means experiencing the legacy of the West African Slave Trade and the impact of the seaport on the city and its heritage. This is a uniquely powerful and inspiring program that explores the following three themes though lectures, seminars, field trips, and music workshops: 1) The Roots of Liverpool Sound - Focuses on Liverpool's musical and socioeconomic relationships with the sea, West Africa, the Caribbean, and the U.S.; 2) Slave City Revisited - Explores Liverpool's role in transatlantic slavery and the development of Black settlements in the UK; 3) Innovation Out of Hardship - Looks at the history of social welfare policy in the UK, focusing on initiatives in Liverpool's Black community. Liverpool's Black Roots gives students the opportunity to study alongside students from the UK and to explore some of the roots of our own society in African culture.

Program Description: This is eight-week program of student teaching at elementary or secondary levels, fulfills certification requirements for New York State. A SUNY Potsdam faculty member accompanies the group to England. Participants are placed in nearby schools. They have a special relationship both with the teacher in their assigned classroom and with their British supervisor, who visits the classroom at least once a week, and who meets with the students as a group almost every day.

Program Description: This ancient city was Wales' second, beginning as a small settlement on the River Tawe. Now it is a modern city with nearly 200,000 inhabitants. It is easily accessible from all parts of the UK and less than 3 hours by train from London. The University lies on Swansea Bay, on the beautiful Gower Peninsula, which serves as a natural field laboratory for students of the natural sciences. Students enroll directly into regular university classes with British students in humanities and natural and social sciences. Courses include American studies, biochemistry, biological sciences, business, chemistry, classics and ancient history, computer science, drama, economics, engineering, English literature, environmental science, geography, geology, history, management science, math, medieval studies, modern languages, oceanography, philosophy, politics, psychology, social history, sociology and anthropology, statistics, and others. Student Teaching Abroad

Program Description: Student Teaching Abroad (STA) is a program administered by SUNY Potsdam in cooperation with Moorhead State University and the University of Minnesota to offer future teachers the opportunity of student teaching internationally in over 30 countries (Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East). Most participants are assigned to independent international schools with English as the medium of instruction, but some with special language qualifications are assigned to national schools where the instruction is in a second language. Others are assigned to public schools if English is the medium of instruction. An effort is made to place the students in geographical areas that will particularly enrich their academic backgrounds, serve their special interests, and expand their cultural horizons.

North African Civilization (Tunisia, Morocco)

Program Description: Before traveling to North Africa, students will complete assignments on the history of nations of the Maghreb region, with particular emphasis on Morocco and Tunisia, through its periods of Berber and Bedouin cultures, the Roman presence, the arrival of Islam, various dynasties, the French protectorate, independence movements, and finally on to modern times. Implicit in this will be a study of languages and dialects, music, folklore, and religions. Then off to Tunisia and Morocco!

Operation Crossroads Africa (OCA): Service Learning in West and East Africa

Program Description: During this seven-week program (late June to mid-August), students live and work in an African community, participating in its daily life. Group-oriented cultural exchange and community development projects are supervised by OCA in conjunction with local, regional, or national community development organizations. Projects typically involve physical labor using indigenous resources. Academic credit for an orientation course in African history and culture is supervised by SUNY Potsdam. Although the language of instruction will be either English or French, assignments in Portuguese are occasionally available. Living standards are consistent with local standards. A personal interview is highly recommended and may be arranged at the home institution.
Eligibility Requirements: Juniors, Seniors, and exceptional Sophomores; those seeking assignment in a French or Portuguese speaking country should have 1 year of language study
