Program Description: From late May through June, students study the coastal ecosystems and human associations near two oceans of Costa Rica. Students explore the differences in ecosystems between the tropical Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, coastal neotropical habitats including shorelines, mangroves, marsh and estuarine environments, coastline origins and geomorphology, and the evolution of oceans. Students also receive lectures on the study of coral reefs, intertidal, nearshore, and littoral habitat types for their biological diversity. Students come to understand man's relationship to these ecotypes and the influences of ocean and sea properties (i.e. sediments, climate, food resources, and archaeological artifacts of indigenous peoples). Emphasis of lectures will be on discovering what scientists do in Oceanology.

Program Description: This course is designed to observe and study the artistic monuments and treasures from Italy's Renaissance period. Works of Renaissance architecture, painting, sculpture, and other applied arts from the Renaissance will be explored in most of their original contexts. Works of Roman antiquities will also be explored in order to trace the parallel of the "Rebirth" of classical art found in the Renaissance period. Instruction will be on site.

Program Description: An international study tour to Italy running from mid-May to mid-June for the examination and study of historical period styles in architecture, furniture, accessories, lighting, art, rugs, tapestries, and fashions. On-site study in Milan, Como, Verona, Venice, Florence, Siena, Assissi, Pisa, and Rome will highlight the political and socioeconomic conditions that influenced the designs of each period. From Leonardo Da Vinci's "The Last Supper" to the Vatican to Palazzo's and factories, students will experience the importance of Italy's role in the history of design.

Program Description: During two weeks in January participants will read (in English) selected works of Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Tolstoy, and then visit residences and museums dedicated to them and their work. In addition to the half day of lectures and discussions, the group will have tours of the highlights in each of these cities. A knowledge of Russian is not required.

Program Description: While in London and Brussels, students study the origins and evolution of American law. Our legal institutions and judicial systems are examined and contemporary legal issues are explored. Students learn to appreciate how law helps us to resolve our conflicts and address our problems through various legal procedures. This course does not focus on specific laws and rules, but rather on understanding the nature of law, how it affects us, and what its limitations are. Instruction is conducted at various sites in London, including Parliament, the Law Courts, the London Stock Exchange, and other locations in order to provide the student with a glimpse of the past. Visitation to the European Parliament and the United Nations in Brussels, Belgium provides an insight into the future of the emerging European community.
