Rainforests to Reefs: Environmental Management in Australia

Program Description: This three-week program involves one week at each of the following sites: the campus of Griffith University, Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Center in the forested hinterland behind the Gold Coast, and the Townsville/Cairns region, the tropical gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Participants will be introduced to current issues that involve competing choices and conflicts over land and resource used in coastal areas of ecological importance. After introductory lectures on these issues and on environmental management and policy making in Australia, students will work in teams on an in-depth field investigation of a particular issue.

Program Description: Participants gain first-hand knowledge of the fascinating city of Havana and of Cuban life and culture during this month-long program. Students reside in the heart of the formerly walled city of Old Havana and experience other parts of Cuba through organized field trips. This interdisciplinary program changes its academic focus each summer to incorporate a variety of fields, such as architecture, art, education, literature, Spanish language, and many others. Classes are taught by University at Buffalo and University of Havana faculty.

Program Description: This is a four-week program of German language and cultural studies. Three levels of German are offered: beginner, intermediate and advanced. The cultural studies provide insight into German politics, literature, and history, as well as German everyday life and leisure activities, tradition, and culture. Students participate in a varied combination of lectures, presentations, and discussion groups. Excursions into the surroundings of Darmstadt and day trips to the world-famous cities of Frankfurt, Heidelberg, and Berlin are also included. An optional two-week internship in engineering is offered at the end of the language and culture program for an additional two credits.

Program Description: This program aims to dispel many of the negative stereotypes about Arabs found in American popular culture. Participants enroll in two, three-credit courses entitled ÒMiddle East SocietyÓ and ÒJordan and Syria in Comparative PerspectiveÓ and an independent study course that draws material from lectures, field trips, and interpersonal experiences. There is also a series of colloquial (Syrian) Arabic lessons. In addition, participants are paired with students from the Damascus University for an ongoing exchange of ideas and information. No previous knowledge of Arabic required.
