Study Program in Uruguay - 1997/1998
Universidad Católica del Uruguay - Advanced Study
Instruction in Spanish
This international program provides students an opportunity to
study at a major Uruguayan private university taking elective
courses in most fields of study. Uruguay is known as being one
of the most prolific growers of cattle in South America.
Uruguay has a temperature and rather humid climate.
Uruguay's three million inhabitants are predominantly
descendants of immigrants from Spain and Italy. Over half of
the population lives in Montevideo. The atmosphere in Uruguay
is quite unlike that in other Spanish American capitals. The
city is cosmopolitan, yet the pace is not hectic.
Cooperating Institution: UNIVERSIDAD CATÓLICA DEL
URUGUAY
The Universidad Católica del Uruguay offers a number of
programs, most all of which are available to students from
SUNY. "Visiting student" status will be granted to
students applying through the SUNY program. U. Católica
is especially strong in sciences, but also has all of the
liberal arts curricula, including important programs in
business, history and public administration.
Location: MONTEVIDEO
Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay and is the largest city
by far. It is a very lively and modern city with some
astonishing and architecturally interesting buildings
especially down the city's main street, the "Ave. 18
de julio". The atmosphere is quite interesting since the
population is almost entirely European with a noticeable
African ("Brazilian") presence. The night life is
quite unique--there are endless number of bars, restaurants
and discotheques where you can find evening recreation.
Academic Program
Students going to Montevideo to study will normally enroll in
the four or five courses for about fifteen credits. These
courses will be arranged to meet individual needs and
interests of each student; instruction will be in Spanish.
Obviously, applicants should be able to understand lectures in
Spanish and have the ability to take notes and write. The
program seeks not just Spanish majors, but encourages
applicants from arts and science majors as well as
business.
The academic program is designed to permit each student the
greatest possible latitude to explore and to understand the
complexities of Uruguayan society while also learning specific
new material in coursework. All important arrangements are
made by the Southern Cone Programs staff. Housing will be
arranged by the International Student Office of the Catholic
University. The cost of this entire program, excluding travel
to and from Uruguay is approximately that of attending a SUNY
university or college.
Students in the Montevideo program should be strong in
Spanish, and comfortable in an international setting. While
the Southern Cone Programs will provide support through the
Universidad Católica del Uruguay, the International
Student Office of the Catholic University will do all they can
to help with this full immersion into Uruguayan society.
Approximate Program Dates
Fall Semester: Arrive in Uruguay by late July, semester ends
by early December.
Spring Semester: Arrive in Uruguay by early March, semester
ends by mid-July.

Fifteen credit hours of electives. Graduate credit is
available by special arrangement.
Housing
Students will stay with Uruguayan families at a cost of
$2,000 for the semester, all meals included. Rent will be
billed by SUNY Plattsburgh; the Universidad Católica
will pay the host family directly. The Universidad
Católica will locate housing in advance. Also,
restaurant meals are modestly priced in Montevideo.

students are charged non-resident tuition: $4,150. A
program fee of $1,385 is charged all students. State and
federal financial aid is applicable. Students participating in
the program MUST have medical insurance which provides
coverage while travelling and studying abroad.
Transportation
International: Students in the program may
choose to travel together to Montevideo via our group flight
with reservation arrangements made by the student. Or you may
use the program's group rate to travel at a time of your
own choosing. The program fare is for a year ticket with an
open return date.

local transportation and other travel expenses. Public
transportation in Montevideo is accessible and relatively
