French Immersion in the Summer

In Québec City

Study and Live in a Predominantly French-Speaking Environment for a Special French Language Immersion Program

The Center for the Study of Canada at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh invites you to apply to an excellent educational program for the summer: a five week French language immersion program in Québec City. Located at Université Laval, this program is especially designed for students with a minimal background in French, as well as for those seeking to improve their oral fluency and reading and writing skills. The program provides the added attraction of living in a fascinating cultural environment--Québec City, one of the world's largest French-speaking communities.

PROGRAM LOCATION: Québec City is a beautiful, clean French-speaking city with all the charm of Europe, but with the flavor of North America. The summer is an especially appealing time, given the city's annual international music festival, various tourist attractions and unparalleled gastronomy.

PARTICIPATING INSTITUTION: Université Laval is the oldest French-speaking university in North America and one of Canada's foremost centers of higher education. The language laboratory, an integral part of the immersion program, uses the most up-to-date equipment. Also, Laval has one of the most extensive sports complexes found anywhere in the world.

PROGRAM PERIOD:
Spring session: May 12 - June 13, 1197 (5 weeks)
Summer Session II: July 7 - August 8, 1997 (5 weeks)

PROGRAM FORMAT:: Upon arrival, students take a preliminary exam to determine their degree of French proficiency. Each student is then enrolled in a special seven credit hour program of intensive French language study geared specifically to his/her degree of fluency and experience. Students may also participate in various cultural activities and field trips to increase their knowledge of French-speaking Canada. Hundreds of students from all over the world enroll in these programs every summer.

CREDITS: 7 undergraduate credits

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES: Cultural, social and sporting activities are organized for students which allow them to apply what they have learned in class. For example, "mini-excursions" in Québec City and weekend "maxi-excursions" outside the city are offered. There are various workshops and cultural events involving theater, folklore, music, etc. Also, students may participate in many sporting events including swimming, tennis, basketball, badminton, and cross country. Most students opt to participate in extracurricular activities as an excellent means of meeting native francophones.

ESTIMATED COSTS:

Program Fee: A $175 administrative fee for one session, $200 for two sessions, and a $100 program deposit, both non-refundable if a student withdraws from the program, are required soon after acceptance. The deposit is refunded after the completion of study at Laval. There is a $15 application fee. The estimated costs for SUNY students who are residents of New York State are given below for tuition and fees, housing and meals, books and supplies, insurance, and social activities. Costs for out of state students may differ. A more detailed financial sheet and out-of-state scholarship application are available on request.
