The Center for the Study of Canada at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh invites you to experience Montréal in the summer by enrolling in French courses for non-Francophones at the Université de Montréal. The École de Fran¸ais has been offering courses in French as a second language to students from around the world for many years and is considered the most important French university in North America.

PROGRAM LOCATION: Located in the heart of French civilization, Montréal is the ideal location for a program of this nature. The city is thoroughly cosmopolitan, combining the charm of old Europe with all the conveniences of a modern North American city. Students may take advantage of all that Montréal--the world's second largest French-speaking city---has to offer, including museums, historic sites, summer theater, concerts and professional sporting events. The city is easily accessible from all regions of the United States.

PARTICIPATING INSTITUTION: École de fran¸ais at the Université de Montréal. Effective courses offered in oral and written French, phonetics, didactics, Québec Culture and business French.

PROGRAM PERIOD:
Spring session: May 20 - June 12
Summer session I: June 30 - July 18
Summer Session II: July 21 - August 8

PROGRAM FORMAT:: To determine the appropriate level of French for each participant, a compulsory placement test is held on the first day of classes. Students are then placed in one of the study levels ranging from beginner to advanced. Students will receive classroom instruction and participate in activities that encourage interaction and usage of French.

CREDITS: 3 or 6 undergraduate credits

HOUSING AND FACILITIES: Students have the option of living in campus accommodations, renting a room or apartment or living with a French family. Contacts and telephone numbers will be available upon request.

ELIGIBILITY: Undergraduates and graduates in good academic standing are eligible to apply., Graduating high school seniors who have been accepted for the fall semester at a college or university and are at least 18 years old may also apply.

ESTIMATED COSTS: The costs for SUNY students who are residents of New York State are given below for fees and tuition, housing and meals, insurance and books. Costs for out of state students may differ. A more detailed financial sheet and out-of-state scholarship form are available on request.

PROGRAM FEE: A $175 administrative fee for one session, $200 for two sessions, and $100 program deposit, both non-refundable if a student withdraws from the program, are required soon after acceptance. The program deposit is refunded after the completion of study at Université de Montréal. There is a $15 application fee.

TUITION: Tuition cost estimates are at the in-state SUNY tuition rate ($137 per credit hour plus college fee).

UNIVERSITY RESIDENCES: The estimated cost is $240 per month for a single room for six weeks or $70 per week. The rooms on the Université de Montréal campus are limited and must be reserved early. Food costs may vary but are estimated at $100 per week.

INSURANCE: It is mandatory that all students have health and accident insurance. Students must provide proof that comprehensive coverage exists while studying in Canada. If not, the SUNY Study Abroad insurance must be acquired ($105.50 for two months).

Spring Session - May 20 to June 12

Whether your are a beginner, intermediate or advanced student, six different course levels give you an excellent choice on the road to speaking French. Using many different activities that emphasize group interaction, teachers expose students to French from a variety of angles calculated to make the students express themselves clearly and accurately.

Written French (3 credits, 60 hours) estimated cost $415
This course teaches the basics of written French if you are a beginner or greatly improves your present ability to write in French if you are an intermediate or advance student. You learn various useful strategies for understanding written texts and essential rules necessary for writing French clearly and adequately. Questions must be asked and answered in French.

Workshop on Teaching French as a Second Language II (3 credits, 45 hours) estimated cost $415
If you are currently a teacher of French as a Second Language, this course is designed for you. The course provides you with an opportunity to master a variety of new concepts in teaching method and to create activities according to up to date pedagogical approaches.

Summer 2 Session-July 21 to August 8

Conversational French (3 credits, 60 hours) estimated cost $415
If your are at the advanced level and the business world is of the great interest, then this course is designed for you. Based on current documents related to business activities, the course enables the student to acquire adequate terminology and language structures and develop oral and written skills. An important part of this course permits you to discover and to understand the business world the French way.

Contemporary Québec Culture (3 credits, 45 hours) estimated cost $415
In collaboration with the Programme d'etudes québécoises, this course is designed for advanced students. Focusing on an ideological and historic perspective, the course helps students discover the cultural and artistic evolution of Québec since 1960.

SCHEDULE: Classes are held during week days in the morning with some classes having afternoon sessions twice a week. Because of this format, only one course could be taken each session. However, students could participate in two consecutive sessions and complete 6 hours. For example, during Summer Session I, a student could take Written French and continue with Summer Session 2 in order to take Business French.

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS: The Center, with assistance from the Québec Government, provides several scholarships of $300 (Canadian ) each to the most qualified and needy SUNY students. There are also scholarships available for out-of-state students. Application forms and procedures may be obtained by communicating with the Center.
