Study in England at
the University of East
Anglia, Norwich
The City of Norwich
SUNY Plattsburgh offers the unique opportunity to participate
in the exchange program with the University of East Anglia,
located in the historic city of Norwich. The city is situated
in eastern central England, about ninety minutes away from
London and Cambridge by train. In this city of 120,000
students discover echoes of the past by visiting the Castle,
Cathedral, Strangers Hall and Bridewell museums. Norwich
boasts the most successful provincial theater in the country,
the Theatre Royal, which sponsors productions ranging from
opera and ballet to pantomime. The city offers a variety of
entertainment options including two theaters, four cinemas, an
art center, frequent concerts, ethnic restaurants and local
pubs.
The Campus
Having received its charter in 1961 and admitting its first
students in 1963, the University of East Anglia (UEA) is one
of the seven so-called "new universities" in England.
Since its creation, the university has grown rapidly and now
has a student population of approximately 7,000. The main
campus, known as the "University Plain", is an
architecturally renowned academic complex. The structure links
the academic buildings, dormitories, and the spectacular
Sansbury Center for Visual Arts with elevated walkways. The
campus spans 270 acres of beautiful parklands situated on the
slopes of the Yare Valley, which is on the outer perimeters of
Norwich. From any point in the University Plain, one can see
meadows, playing fields and woods. Norfolk County is famous
for its lakes, ponds and canals; for this reason the
architects constructed a lake on the campus.
Exchange Program Periods
The university academic year is divided into two semesters.
The fall semester generally begins in mid September with
Christmas break about mid December. The spring semester begins
in late January. There is a break at Easter and final exams
begin at the end of April. Students may attend for one
semester, of for a full academic year. An orientation for
International Students precedes each semester.
Plattsburgh has two separate exchange agreements with the
University of East Anglia, one with the School of English and
American Studies, the other with the School of Environmental
Science. SUNY students are expected to take the normal
academic load of 30 credits for the academic year or 15 for a
semester. UEA offers courses in art history, economics,
development studies, law, mathematics, physics, English and
American studies, environmental science, European history,
music, philosophy, education, linguistics, modern languages,
creative writing, French culture and society and a number of
other disciplines. Study abroad students are expected to take
at least one course in their school of registration - the
School of English and American Studies or the School of
Environmental Science.
Housing
Students are housed in single study rooms in resident halls on
the main campus. There is no "meal plan" at UEA.
Students either cook for themselves in the shared kitchen
facilities or make use of the wide range of restaurants,
buffets and snack bars on campus, where students can eat at
reasonable prices. The communal kitchen facilities in the
residences provide an ideal opportunity for exchange students
to meet British students from other countries.
Financial Information and Expenses
Room, board and fees are comparable to SUNY Plattsburgh's
fee schedule.
This is a SUNY exchange and Overseas Academic Program. SUNY
students pay SUNY tuition, fees, room and board charges. The
program fee for administrative costs associated with the
exchange is $500 per year or $275 per semester. The
International Student Identification Card (ISIC) is included
with the program fee. Students applying to the program pay a
nonrefundable $15 application fee. Students are eligible
for most forms of financial aid. For more information, please
contact your Financial Aid Office. Non-SUNY applicants should
write or call for a
specific fee schedule. Scholarships are available for
Plattsburgh students.
Travel To and From England
There are several student organizations which offer discounted
rates. The ISIC, International Student Identity Card, included
with your program fee includes additional insurance along with
discounted rates through council travel. Plattsburgh assists
in making group flight arrangements if there are a sufficient
number of students.
Insurance
Students participating in the program MUST have health and
accident insurance which provides coverage while traveling and
studying abroad. SUNY does offer study abroad insurance which
may be waived if students have personal coverage.
Eligibility
Juniors and seniors (status at the time of anticipated
participation) are eligible to apply. Students with a 2.8 GPA
or better will have the best chance of being accepted.
Preference will be given to students who wish to spend the
full academic year at UEA. Environmental science candidates
should have a GPA of 3.0 or better. Non-SUNY students are also
encouraged to apply.
Application Forms and Deadlines
