Study in Canada
In Exciting Toronto
The Center for the Study of Canada at SUNY Plattsburgh is
pleased to announce an opportunity for students to participate
in a "study abroad" program in Toronto, Province of
Ontario, Canada. Based at the outstanding University of
Toronto, this program will provide students with the
invaluable experience of attending one of North America's
foremost universities. The academic program is designed to
permit each student the greatest possible latitude to explore
and understand the complexities of Canadian society while
taking courses in a broad variety of areas in and outside of
Canadian Studies.
Study in Toronto
Toronto, the capital city of Ontario, is located on the shores
of Lake Ontario on the southern margin of the province. The
city has a population of over three million and an economy
that is among the fastest growing in the world. Toronto is a
vast and diverse city and is the main urban cultural focus of
English Canada. It is the home of the world renowned Royal
Ontario Museum and the innovative Ontario Science Center, the
Toronto Symphony and the National Ballet of Canada. In
professional sports, Toronto the Toronto Maple Leafs (hockey),
Toronto Blue Jays (baseball), and Toronto Argonauts
(football). The city is well-served by expressways and major
highways all linked to the North American continental highway
system, and three international airports. There is also
excellent internal transit with public streetcar, bus and
subway systems.
Participating Institution: University of
Toronto
The University of Toronto was founded as King's College by
royal charter in 1827. It is Canada's largest university
and has a long and complex history. Presently, the full time
undergraduate population is 27,000. Yet, the university is
comprised of many constituent colleges, each with its own
identity, buildings, dorms and infrastructures (i.e., similar
to the Yale and Oxford model). University College, the oldest
and most venerable of the colleges, serves as the
"home" for this study abroad program. Thus, students
have the opportunity to avail themselves of all that a large
university has to offer while at the same time, being resident
in a small college atmosphere.
Program Administration
Center administrators monitor and frequently interact with the
students in the program. The Director of Canadian Studies and
Registrar at University College are also readily available for
academic counseling and advice.
Educational Program and Facilities
The range of undergraduate programs at the University of
Toronto is large, and students have considerable choice and a
great degree of flexibility in choosing courses. Students from
SUNY may enroll in any courses offered by the Faculty of Arts
and Science at University College, and the University as a
whole, provided the pre-requisites have been met and with the
understanding that departmental selection may be required for
certain courses with limited enrollment. These arrangements
will be made in advance with our assistance. Students must
enroll in at least one Canadian content course of their choice
each semester. Participants should acquire a basic
understanding of
Canada, regardless of their specific area of study. A four or
five-class course load, 12 to 15 credits; per semester is
standard.
Program Periods
Students may participate during the fall semester or for the
academic year
Semesters are more compressed at Canadian
universities and thus, most course work and examinations are
completed by December 15 and April 25 for the fall and spring
semester respectively.
