Study in Canada at McGill University
In Cosmopolitan Montreal
For more than 20 years the Center for the Study of Canada has
offered SUNY and other students an opportunity to study for a
semester or an academic year in Montreal, Province of Quebec,
Canada. The program is based at McGill University, often
referred to as "Canada's Harvard". Students may
enroll in a variety of courses in and outside of Canadian
Studies and experience life in bilingual, multicultural
Montreal. An added bonus: the cost of the program is
approximately the same as that of a SUNY institution.
Study in Montreal
Participants in the program are able to experience all that
Montreal has to offer. In addition to a wide range of musical
events and frequent repertory performances, Montreal has
numerous historic sites, a proliferation of fine art
galleries, museums, restaurants, major leagues sporting
events, and other cultural and recreational facilities to suit
every taste. The city is also easily accessible from the
United States.
Participating Institution: Mc Gill
University
McGill is an English speaking, co-ed institution and one of
the oldest and most respected in North America. Its facilities
and library are among the most impressive on the continent.
Participants live in the heart of Montreal on a beautiful,
historic, 76-building campus. This downtown location places
the student within easy reach of various shopping areas,
sports facilities and theaters.
Program Administration
Center Administrators monitor and frequently interact with
faculty and students enrolled in the program in Montreal. All
academic matters on campus are handled by the Director of
Canadian Studies. In addition, a resident director, usually a
graduate student at McGill, takes care of the day-to-day
operation of the program.
Educational Program and Facilities
The range of undergraduate programs at McGill University is
large, and students have considerable choice and a great
degree of flexibility in choosing courses. The program is
designed primarily for students in the humanities and social
sciences, but courses in science, music and management are
available by special arrangement. Specifically, courses are
offered in such areas as anthropology, art history, economics,
English, geography, history, political science, psychology,
sociology, Women's studies, and many languages including
French, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian and Danish.
Students must enroll in at least one Canadian content course
of their choice each semester. Participants should acquire a
basic understanding of Canada, regardless of their specific
area of study. The balance of the course work may be elected
from those offered in many disciplines within the Faculty of
Arts and Science. A four or five course load (12-15 credits)
per semester is standard.
Program Periods
Three options are available: fall semester, spring semester or
the academic year. Semesters are more condensed at Canadian
universities and thus, most course work and examinations are
completed by December 15 (fall) and April 25 (spring).
Program Eligibility
The program is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors who have
attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale) or better who are
currently enrolled in a SUNY university. Non-SUNY students are
also encouraged to apply.
Housing
Two housing options are available-the McGill dormitories and
off-campus housing. If students choose to reside in the
dormitories, all arrangements will be made by the Center. In
general, all rooms are single occupancy with linen service
provided. The major responsibility for arranging off-campus
housing rests with the student.

SUNY students are usually eligible for all financial
assistance normally available at their home campus. Make sure
to consult the financial aid office on your campus for
