Study in Canada at Laval University
In Quebec City
The Center for Study of Canada at SUNY Plattsburgh has for
many years operated a successful "Study in Canada"
program in Quebec City, Province of Quebec, Canada based at
Université Laval. While the program is valuable for
students already fluent in French, it is especially designed
for students with no previous knowledge of French and for
those seeking to improve their conversation and writing
skills. The program provides the added attraction of living
amid the charm of one of North America's most historic
cities and one of the world's largest French-speaking
communities. In short, the Quebec City program provides an
ideal opportunity for students to begin the study of French or
to improve their fluency while living in a fascinating
cultural environment. All important arrangements, including
the processing of visas, is undertaken by the Center
personnel. The cost of the program, moreover, is approximately
that of attending a SUNY university.
Quebec City
Students have access to a city known especially for its
cultural heritage and distinctiveness. In the new city, one
has access to all conveniences and attractions of a modern,
efficient North American metropolis. Very near the urban area
are quaint rural villages, the world renowned Ste. Anne de
Beaupre Shrine, wilderness areas of great beauty and the huge
Mont Ste. Anne ski resort. Indeed, facilities for many winter
sports can be found in abundance near the campus and in the
surrounding area.
Participating Institution: Université
Laval
Université Laval is the oldest French-speaking
university in North America located on a spacious and modern
campus in the heart of metropolitan Quebec City. It is
recognized as one of the foremost centers of higher learning
in Canada.
Program Administration
The proximity of Quebec City to SUNY Plattsburgh allows the
Center's administrators to easily monitor and interact
with faculty, students and school administrators. Also, a
liaison student is employed each semester to take care of
non-academic activities. All academic matters are handled most
capably by a special person at Laval in the office of the
French immersion program.
Educational Program and Facilities
By far the most popular among our students are the highly
respected and successful French language training and
immersion programs for non-francophones. The language
laboratory, an integral part of the immersion program, uses
the most-up-to-date equipment. The library at the university
is among the most comprehensive in North America. Laval also
has one of the most modern sports complexes found anywhere.
Students who plan to enroll in the French language training
and immersion program take a placement examination upon
arrival, the results of which will be used to determine their
level of French proficiency. Each student is then enrolled in
a special fifteen credit hour program of intensive French
language study geared specifically to his/her degree of
fluency. The program includes course work in French grammar,
composition, phonetics, and direct conversation. Only students
who are already fluent, after consultation with program
personnel, may enroll in special content courses for
non-francophones or in any course offered by the
university.
An attractive feature of the Quebec City program is its
non-academic component. The social and cultural program each
semester includes an orientation session, an introductory
dinner and one social or cultural event, all organized by the
program. Students also have complete access to all modern
sports, music and theatrical facilities on campus. Because
Canada's eligibility regulations are much less stringent
than ours, visiting students may participate in
intercollegiate athletics (e.g. swimming, basketball, and
hockey) while at Laval.
Program Periods
Students may participate during the fall semester, spring
semester, for the
academic year or for any two consecutive semesters (i.e.,
fall-spring, spring-fall).
Semesters are more compressed at Canadian
universities and thus, most course work and examinations are
completed by December 15 (fall) and April 15 (spring).
Program Eligibility
Sophomores, juniors and seniors (at the time of participation)
in good standing,
minimum 2.5 GPA and currently enrolled at SUNY
institutions are
eligible to apply for the Quebec City program. Non-SUNY
students are also encouraged to apply.
Housing
Two housing options are available-the Laval dormitories and
off-campus housing. If students choose to reside in the
dormitories, all arrangements will be made by the Center. All
rooms are single occupancy with linen (bedding) service
provided. A meal plan may be purchased after arrival. However,
there are kitchen facilities in each dorm and students may
purchase meals at a reasonable price in the cafeterias on
campus. Students may also rent small refrigerators for their
rooms. While we are happy to provide some details and
assistance, the major responsibility for arranging off-campus
housing rests with the student.
