The University of Wollongong
The University of Wollongong (pronounced Wool-'n-gong) is
close to the city but in a beautifully landscaped setting,
provides an ideal atmosphere for study and for leisure. the
university dates from 1951 and has an enrollment of
approximately 12,000 students. It takes its name from the city
of Wollongong (an aboriginal word meaning "sound of the
waves") which is Australia's seventh largest city and
one of the most cosmopolitan in the country. As a result,
diverse tastes in food, clothing and cultural mores are found.
Shops, theatres, cinemas, art galleries and the performing
arts center are all located close to the university.
The Campus
The University is located 50 miles south of Sydney, the site
for the 2000 Olympics just an hour away by train, car or bus,
and is situated on 232 acres on the lower slopes of a range of
mountains covered with rainforests. It is a very attractive
campus with trees, ponds and a waterfall. Some of
Australia's finest swimming beaches are located close to
the campus. In sum, Wollongong is a modern, innovative
institution providing a center of international distinction
for study abroad students.
Educational Programs and Facilities
Courses are offered in eight faculties-arts, commerce,
education, engineering, health and behavioral science,
information technology and communications, law and science. Of
special interest to U.S. students would be the many subjects
which have a specific Australian content. All students have
excellent access to computers and are provided with internet
accounts for the duration of their studies.

An orientation session takes place at the beginning of each
semester and is compulsory for new students. There are usually
13 or 14 teaching weeks in each session with short study break
periods each semester.
Accommodations
University accommodation is provided in five residential
complexes on or close to the main campus. International House,
Weerona College, and Campus East all provide breakfast, dinner
and lunch plus single or double rooms; Kooloobong and Gundi
are self-catering apartments for 2-7 students. Off-campus
accommodations in apartments or a shared house can be arranged
with the university accommodation officer.

SUNY students pay regular SUNY tuition and college fees at
their home campuses. All other students pay tuition and all
other fees directly to Plattsburgh. Since SUNY students remain
officially registered at their home campuses, financial aid
for New York State students is applicable as are most other
forms of financial aid. Non-SUNY students should check with
their home campus financial aid office. Students must pay
program fees in full before departure. Fees for lodging are
paid in Australia directly to the university or landlord.
Please call or write for a current fee schedule. NOTE: SUNY
out-of-state tuition is $4,150.
Eligibility
SUNY and non-SUNY students with a GPA of 2.8 or better are
eligible to apply. Acceptance is based on the student's
academic standing, recommendations, and the quality of the
"program of study" statement.
Application forms and deadlines
Early applications are encouraged. There is a rolling
admissions policy.
March 15 for the July semester - session 2 (in
Australia)
October 15 for the February semester - session 1(in
Australia)
Late applications will be considered only if space is
available and sufficient time remains to process the student
visa. The standard SUNY overseas academic program application
form must be used and may be obtained at any SUNY Office of
International Education.
