Study in Australia at
The University of
Queensland
The University of Queensland, established in 1909, is
known internationally as one of Australia's leading
universities. It is among the largest and most prestigious
universities in the country, with a student population of
approximately 24,000 enrolled in 63 academic departments and
15 faculties.
The Campus and Brisbane
The University of Queensland has an exceptional campus -
perhaps the most beautiful in Australia. The main campus is
located in St. Lucia, a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland's
capital. The University's beautifully landscaped campus is
set in 282 acres of a riverside parkland. Brisbane (population
1.2 million) is a modern city and the gateway to the
magnificent Great Barrier Reef, the lush farming districts of
the Darlin Downs and Australia's vast Outback. The city is
the sunniest capital in Australia and enjoys a warm climate -
ideal for sports and outdoor activities. It is a mixture of
relaxed, casual subtropical living amid the business-like
bustle of a large commercial center.
Educational Program and Facilities
The University of Queensland offers an extensive range of
undergraduate subjects in the areas of liberal arts and
sciences, including the physical and biological sciences. The
University has the largest library in Queensland, extensive
computing facilities, a language laboratory, photography and
television units, museums, banks, theatres, an olympic
swimming pool, and the lecture and laboratory facilities
expected in a large modern university. More than 100 clubs,
societies and sporting groups cater to a wide variety of
interests.
Program Periods
The first term begins in mid February and ends in late June;
the second term begins in mid July and ends in late
November.
An overseas orientation program precedes each semester and is
compulsory for new students. The academic year is divided into
two semesters, each containing 13 teaching weeks. There are
also short mid-semester breaks. Examination periods are
usually three weeks and the university will not allow any
variations in the official schedule.
Accommodations
Single rooms with shared facilities are available on campus
and are allocated by the Principal of each of the 10
residential colleges, but spaces are very limited, and
students must submit applications directly to the appropriate
college. SUNY Plattsburgh has an arrangement with Union
College to reserve a limited number of rooms each semester. It
is on a first come, first serve basis and provides students
who are accepted with specific details. An accommodation
officer is available for assistance with off campus housing as
well, the International Education Office of the University of
Queensland arranges for temporary accommodations upon arrival
to give students time to choose a shared accommodation (house
or apartment) close to the university.

forms of financial aid. Non-SUNY students should check with
their home campus financial aid office. Students must pay
program fees in full before departure. Unless there is a
consortium agreement with financial aid awards on file, please
call or write for a current fee schedule. Fees for lodging are
paid in Australia.

SUNY and non-SUNY students with a GPA of 2.6 or better are
eligible to apply. Acceptance is based on a student's
academic standing, recommendations, and the quality of the
