Study Program in Argentina - 1997/1998
Universidad del Salvador
This international program provides students an opportunity to
study at a leading Argentine university selecting courses from
most fields of study, while living in a cultured,
cosmopolitan and dynamic city. Buenos Aires, famous as the
port of the rich grain and beef Pampa hinterland, is
characterized by the European turn-of-the-century look of its
streets and buildings. At the same time, the city reflects a
truly original American culture, symbolized by the tango.
Night life is a pleasure for young people seeking time to talk
and meet with friends or to sit at a sidewalk cafe watching
the city pass.
Cooperating Institution: Universidad del Salvador
The Universidad del Salvador, a private Catholic university
(Jesuit in origin), offers a number of programs, most of which
are available to students from SUNY. "Visiting
student" status is granted to students applying through
the SUNY program. Universidad del Salvador is especially
strong in business and public administration, but also has all
of the liberal arts curricula.
Location: Buenos Aires
The campus of the Universidad del Salvador (USAL) is located
in the heart of the city near the Avenida 9 de Julio.
The city, with a population of about 10,500,000, is stretched
along the shore of the Rio de La Plata. Its many diverse
neighborhoods are examples of urbane living, waiting to be
explored.
Academic Program
Students going to Buenos Aires to study will normally enroll
in the four or five courses for about fifteen credits. These
courses will be arranged to meet the individual needs and
interests of each student; instruction will be in Spanish.
Obviously, applicants should be able to understand lectures in
Spanish and have the ability to take notes and write. The
program seeks not just Spanish majors, but encourages
applicants from all fields in arts and science, as well as
business.
The academic program is designed to permit each student the
greatest possible latitude to explore and understand the
complexities of Argentine society while also learning specific
new material in course work. All local arrangements will be
handled by the International Student Office of USAL.
Students in Buenos Aires should be strong in Spanish language
skills, and comfortable in an international setting. The
student will be more than on his or her own than if studying
in one of the SUNY Southern Cone Programs in Chile. However,
the International Student Office of USAL will do all they can
to help students with this full immersion into
Argentine society.
