State University of New York (SUNY) The State University of New York (SUNY) currently offers more than 400 overseas study programs in more than 50 countries: in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Programs range from 2-3 week intensive courses to a semester or academic year abroad. Courses are available in more than 100 subjects, ranging alphabetically from aboriginal studies and aerospace engineering to western philosophy and women's studies. While many programs focus on language learning and are conducted in the language of the host country, many others are conducted wholly or partly in English.

Overview The State University of New York overseas study programs are, with some exceptions, open to all SUNY and non-SUNY students, with eligibility ranging from first year to graduate level. For many undergraduates, the best time to study abroad has traditionally been during the junior year; however, well-prepared sophomores, and occasionally freshmen, are eligible for some programs. For everyone, careful preparation and consultation with the campus Director of International Education are essential for determining where and when to go. Setting Study abroad can be one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences in a college student's career. Getting to know another culture, living in a new environment, learning a new language, meeting people: all these add up to a kind of education different from what can be acquired on campus. Equally important for American students is the discovery of their own country, its customs, its traditions and values, as they come to see it from a foreign vantage point. No wonder that so many returnees from overseas study say that the experience changed their lives.

Students learn well and mature quickly when studying in a different culture. And as all regions of the world become more interdependent, it is increasingly apparent that the truly educated person is one who has had first hand acquaintance with other cultures, both as preparation for responsible citizenship and, in a more practical way, as a basis for a career. In the words of former Senator J. William Fulbright, author of the Fulbright exchange program, "perhaps the greatest power of educational exchange is the power to convert nations into peoples and to translate ideologies into human aspirations".

Value Total expenses are competitive with other highly-rated study abroad programs in public and private universities across the country. Program costs are usually only slightly higher than on-campus costs of tuition, room and board (exclusive of international air fare) and in some countries expenses are actually less than they would be on campus. Study abroad students pay SUNY tuition (in-state or out-of-state, depending upon New York State residency) plus costs, which vary from program to program. Matriculated students at a State University of New York campus register on their home campus for programs offered at any other campus. They are thus able to maintain residency and eligibility for financial aid. (NOTE: Upper-division students registering at community colleges for overseas programs should consult with their registrar's office about appropriate credit.)

Most financial aid can be applied to overseas study, with the exception of some program costs and fees. For specific information students should consult the campus financial aid officer and the Director of International Education.

State University of New York College at Brockport (SUNY) The Jamaica Performing Arts Program is hosted by the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts, which offers a wide variety of performance and studio courses in each of its Schools - the School of Art, the School of Dance, and the School of Drama.

Overview Prior to departure, participants select an individual program of study from the courses listed. Instruction is by the Edna Manley College faculty and participants are examined in the same manner and are held to the same standards as their Jamaican counterparts.

Setting Kingston lies on the southeastern coast of the island at the foot of the Blue Mountains, said to be the most beautiful mountain chains in the West Indies. Kingston is the cultural, political, industrial and financial center and home to a natural harbor that is among the largest in the world.

Value In addition to courses in these performing arts areas, the College offers a range of upper-division courses in Caribbean studies and culture. - 15 undergraduate credits.

The International Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership.

Partnership for Service-Learning IPSL programs offer a fully integrated study abroad experience. By uniting academic study for credit with substantive volunteer service and living in a family homestay or with students on-campus, you are fully immersed in several levels of the culture at once.

Overview "Institutions in Jamaican Society" draws from anthropology, sociology, history, organization development, etc., and incorporates the learning done in the service agency. Other courses include Caribbean literature and history. (15 credits)

SIT Study Abroad In Kingston, Jamaica's thriving capital and cultural center, you examine the intense interaction of gender, race, and class in Jamaican society, including the country's gender-based division of labor, the marginalization of the Jamaican male, Jamaican feminist movements, and problems of social cohesion related to gender.

Setting 7 weeks homestay in Kingston and ten days in a rural village. This program generally includes exursions to the parishes of St. James, St. Elizabeth, St. Mary and Portland to study projects on gender and environmental issues.

SEA Education Association Focusing on deep-water oceanographic studies, students undertake coursework ashore in oceanography, nautical science and maritime literature and history, followed by a practical component of hands-on marine science and blue-water sailing at sea.

Overview Students will receive a broad understanding of the world's oceans through an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines the sciences, social sciences, humanities and public policy.

Caribbean Literature and Culture in Jamaica
The course will focus on three major intertwined issues: Slavery and it's Legacy, Oral Traditions, and Creolization of Culture. The program features a variety of guest lectures on music, politics, and theater.

Overview Spend your winter discovering the literature and culture of the Caribbean in beautiful Jamaica. Through novels, poetry, music, and film program participants will examine the Caribbean-Creole experience of colonial and postcolonial history, culture, and identity.

Setting The largest English-speaking country in the Caribbean, Jamaica is famous for its beautiful beaches, wonderful weather and friendly people. The program includes travel to Mona, Kingston, Negril, Treasure Beach and more visiting musuems, historical sites, and theaters.

Value Includes tuition (3 credits), housing, roundtrip airfare, transportation between program sites, and museum entrance fees. Students will be responsible for their own meals - some group dinners will be included. Additional costs include a study abroad fee, meals, personal spending money for shopping and any excursions they undertake during free time.

University of Connecticut Study and explore the historical, cultural, artistic and psychological foundations of this Caribbean society. Aspects of the religious, political, entrepreneurial and linguistic expressions will also be examined.

Overview Immersed in the sunny Jamaican culture, participants will meet in small groups for lectures given my faculty of the University of the West Indies and these lectures will be enhanced with visits to historical sites around the island.

Setting Students will experience 18 days and 17 nights in accommodations provided by the University of the West Indies (Mona Campus).

Value Earn up to six undergraduate credits or three graduate credits in the warm climate of Kingston, Jamaica while experiencing the uniqueness of the Caribbean lifestyle.
