SIT Study Abroad Bali provides an ideal setting in which to study the contending forces and contradictions at play throughout Indonesia. As you study the artistic and cultural traditions of the Balinese and examine conflicts between economic goals and local culture, you gain insight into the challenges of traditional society affected by an international tourist population and increasing development.

Overview Intensive Language Study: Bahasa Indonesian; Arts and Culture Seminar: Balinese Arts, Cultural Anthropology, History and Politics, Geography and Economics, Educational Excursions; Field Study Seminar; and Independent Study Project. (16 credits in total)

Setting Five week homestay in villages in the Ubud/Peliatan area. The program includes field trips to historic and cultural sites, development project sites, temple festivals, and local ceremonies on the island of Bali.

Overview A unique educational adventure set aboard traditionally rigged schooners while voyaging throughout the world's oceans. Student's may select to sail the near coastal waters of the Caribbean Sea or cross a major ocean, such as the Indian, Atlantic or Pacific. Sea-mester is fully accredited. Based upon principles of experiential education, the primary academic foci of oceanography, marine biology, nautical science, and leadership are brought from the textbook into real life application.

Global Learning Across Borders: Culture Through Community: A Semester in Southeast Asia

Global Learning Across Borders Highlights include: study of Balinese culture; Indonesian language instruction; homestays and service work in the traditional Indonesian village of Balaban; introduction to Thai culture in Bangkok; trekking among the northern Thai border hill tribe communities; community service activities with the Karen hill tribe; a 10-day Buddhist mediation retreat; excursions to The Killing Fields in Cambodia; service work at Ptea Teuk Dong (PTD), a center for street families on the outskirts of Phnom Penh; and exploration of the legendary temples of Angkor Wat.

Overview With an emphasis on “community immersion” in incredibly diverse Southeast Asian settings—from Bali to Bangkok, Pai to Phnom Penh—participants will experience culture, tradition, religion, and a sense of place with grassroots perspective and intensity.

Setting This semester will begin in Bali, Indonesia, and include visits and stays in the town of Ubud and traditional village of Baraban; then the program will continue in Thailand with stays in Bangkok, Pai, Chiang Mai (the "Rose of the North"), and a trekking/community segment in the hills of the northern border; finally, the program will conclude in Cambodia with stays in Phnom Pehn, Battambang, and an exploration of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap.
