Boston University Division of International Programs The Dresden Engineering and Science Program is a one-semester program, ideally suited for second-semester sophomores in engineering. The program carries no prior language requirement; engineering courses are taught in English by German faculty.
Overview Part I, February through mid-March Intensive Beginning German (4 credits), The Social Nature of Technology (4 credits)
Part II, April through mid-July; Students choose three of the following: Differential Equations, Waves and Modern Physics, Electric Circuit Theory, Principles of Biology, Linear Algebra, & Engineering and Thermodynamics.
Total: 20 credits, with an official Boston University transcript on completion of the program. All science and engineering courses are taught in English by members of the TUD faculty.
Setting Courses are taught by faculty of the Technische Universitat Dresden. Students live in university residence halls in Dresden, the ancient capitol of Saxony.

Boston University Division of International Programs After completing the intensive German-language and cultural-immersion course, music students have the opportunity to enroll in music history, music theory and other classes at Technische Universitat Dresden (TUD) and performance classes at the Carla Maria von Weber Hochschule fur Musik.
Setting Program participants live in university dormitories with German and other international students. Students receive meal stipends, which may be used to buy food at student cafeteries, or students can shop at grocery stores or markets in Dresden and prepare their meals in the dormitory kitchens.

Students elect 3 liberal arts subjects from among 5 courses: German History 1871 to the Present ; European Business Economics ; 20th Century German Literature, Theater and Cabaret ; Conflict Studies ; and Symphonic Music and Opera, Mozart to Mahler.
Setting The Berlin Residential Program of Nazareth College is located in Berlin, the capital city of Germany, and now in the geographical middle of the new EU, United Europe. Berlin offers students almost limitless opportunities to experience events first-hand that affect Europe and the world.

IES - Institute for the International Education of Students The IES European Union Program offers outstanding opportunities for Economics, Political Science, International Relations, and International Business majors. Students focus on the development and activities of the EU while living in Freiburg and take field trips to sites important to the affairs and interests of the European Union and its plans for the future. Courses emphasize the historical and institutional development of the EU, its internal policies, issues of culture and multiculturalism, and its relations with outside nations.
Overview The Model EU simulation is a field study component of the program and is held for a weekend each semester. Students are offered the opportunity to participate in internships as academic options after the conclusion of the EU program.
Setting Situated on the edge of the beautiful Black Forest, Freiburg is a picturesque university and medieval cathedral town with a rich educational heritage. Overview The IES Freiburg program provides semester and academic year opportunities for rigorous undergraduate study in German Language and Literature, Social Sciences, Humanities, Business, and Economics. Now a modern, cosmopolitan city of 200,000 people, Freiburg's skyline is still dominated by the famous gothic cathedral and small streams (called Bachle) dating from the Middle Ages still flow along the narrow streets in the city center. State University of New York (SUNY) The State University of New York (SUNY) currently offers more than 400 overseas study programs in more than 50 countries: in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Programs range from 2-3 week intensive courses to a semester or academic year abroad. Courses are available in more than 100 subjects, ranging alphabetically from aboriginal studies and aerospace engineering to western philosophy and women's studies. While many programs focus on language learning and are conducted in the language of the host country, many others are conducted wholly or partly in English.
Overview The State University of New York overseas study programs are, with some exceptions, open to all SUNY and non-SUNY students, with eligibility ranging from first year to graduate level. For many undergraduates, the best time to study abroad has traditionally been during the junior year; however, well-prepared sophomores, and occasionally freshmen, are eligible for some programs. For everyone, careful preparation and consultation with the campus Director of International Education are essential for determining where and when to go. Setting Study abroad can be one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences in a college student's career. Getting to know another culture, living in a new environment, learning a new language, meeting people: all these add up to a kind of education different from what can be acquired on campus. Equally important for American students is the discovery of their own country, its customs, its traditions and values, as they come to see it from a foreign vantage point. Students learn well and mature quickly when studying in a different culture. And as all regions of the world become more interdependent, it is increasingly apparent that the truly educated person is one who has had first hand acquaintance with other cultures, both as preparation for responsible citizenship and, in a more practical way, as a basis for a career. In the words of former Senator J. William Fulbright, author of the Fulbright exchange program, "perhaps the greatest power of educational exchange is the power to convert nations into peoples and to translate ideologies into human aspirations".Value Total expenses are competitive with other highly-rated study abroad programs in public and private universities across the country. Program costs are usually only slightly higher than on-campus costs of tuition, room and board (exclusive of international air fare) and in some countries expenses are actually less than they would be on campus. Study abroad students pay SUNY tuition (in-state or out-of-state, depending upon New York State residency) plus costs, which vary from program to program. Matriculated students at a State University of New York campus register on their home campus for programs offered at any other campus. They are thus able to maintain residency and eligibility for financial aid. (NOTE: Upper-division students registering at community colleges for overseas programs should consult with their registrar's office about appropriate credit.)

Heidelberg College The American Junior Year Program AJY students are enrolled at the University of Heidelberg, Germany's oldest university. Students have full use of the AJY study center in the heart of Heidelberg's Altstadt and the support of the Resident Director and Associate Director in choosing appropriate courses.
Overview Upon arrival in Heidelberg (September or March) there is a four-week preliminary course. Afterwards, students can select from a wide variety of courses in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences at the University of Heidelberg.

New York University, International Studies NYU Spring in Berlin is a semester-long study abroad program based at the prestigious Humboldt University, located near the heart of the city on Unter den Linden. The program features NYU courses, taught by NYU faculty, members of the Humboldt faculty, and Berlin's wider academic community.
Overview Students are required to take a foundation course, Contemporary Germany in a United Europe, and choose from seminars and lecture courses in German studies, sociology, cultural studies and European studies. State Univ. of NY College at Cortland This is a one-to-one exchange program. Preceding the formal academic studies of spring semester, students are oriented to the new academic and cultural environment and intensive German language study. Students then choose from the regular Fachhochschule offerings.
Overview Prior to the beginning of the academic semester, there will be an introductory course in German Language and introduction to the new academic environment and to the life of the country.
Setting Located in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, along the Rhine river between Dusseldorf and Bonn, Cologne is one of Germany's oldest cities. It boasts a population of approximately 1.8 million and is the largest university city in Germany.

Antioch College This program is for students seeking independence, cultural immersion and the opportunity to tailor aspects of their overseas studies to their own particular skills and interests. Students will learn what it is to live, work, and study in Germany as Germans do. During the academic year, students are housed in dormitories and shared apartments with German students.
Overview Students receive intensive pre-semester preparation, including 4 to 8 weeks of language study at a Goethe Institute, followed by a five-week intensive Language Study and Orientation Program at Tuebingen University. Students then enroll in courses at the university, choosing from the extensive regular curriculum and from a supplementary range of courses for foreigners in German language, society and culture.

Antioch College The Comparative Women's Studies in Europe Program offers a unique opportunity to explore feminist theory in practice across Europe. The program examines the trends and dynamics of European social, economic and political systems as they influence contemporary gender theory, policy and women's identities.
Overview The program begins with a two-week orientation at the European NOISE Summer School where Women's Studies students work closely with faculty from the European Thematic Network of Women's Studies, ATHENA. Students attend lectures and workshops with the program director, visiting professors from European universities, NGO's, politicians, practitioners, artists and activists.
Setting Each year the summer school is located in a different European city. Students will attend lectures and conduct original field research in Berlin, Germany; Krakow and Warsaw, Poland; Utrecht and Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Brussels, Belgium;and London, the United Kingdom.

Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS) - Murray State University (MSU) The Regensburg, Germany Program will last thirteen weeks. Davidson College The program starts in mid-August with a three-week family home stay in northern Germany. The home stay is followed by an intensive language course in Wuerzburg, after which students enroll at the university.
Overview Courses are offered in all disciplines of the humanities and sciences. Students may earn credit for up to eight courses for their year in Wuerzburg.

Long a cultural center, Wuerzburg's music school, theater, opera, and orchestra, its many museums, frequent festivals, and varied sport facilities make it a place of many opportunities for students to participate in the diversity of German life.
Value Students can be of any major; students are enrolled at the university, not in special courses; there is a four week homestay in Northern Germany prior to the first semester; students then live in a dorm; and there are several cultural activities offered. Resident Director assists in course selection, monitors academic performance, and works with German colleagues to evaluate student work.
