Institute for Shipboard Education - Semester at Sea Administered by the nonprofit Institute for Shipboard Education, Semester at Sea® is a program that takes approximately 600 students--from colleges and universities across the United States and abroad--around the world each fall, spring and summer semester. The University of Virginia is the program's academic sponsor.
Overview Since 1963, over 45,000 students have studied and traveled to 60 countries around the world during fall and spring semesters through this program. A regional 65-day summer program also takes students to countries in the Pacific Rim, Latin America or Europe and the Mediterranean.
Setting Semester at Sea offers two voyages each year that circumnavigate the earth, and one that is more regional in focus. The fall terms typically begin in Ensenada, Mexico, and end in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, while the winter/spring terms generally begin in Nassau, Bahamas, and end in San Diego, California or Seattle, Washington. Our 65-day regional summer program takes students to countries within the Pacific Rim, Latin America or Europe and the Mediterranean.
Value Students earn academic credit, travel the world, and gain a global perspective.

State University of New York (SUNY) The State University of New York (SUNY) currently offers more than 400 overseas study programs in more than 50 countries: in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Programs range from 2-3 week intensive courses to a semester or academic year abroad. Courses are available in more than 100 subjects, ranging alphabetically from aboriginal studies and aerospace engineering to western philosophy and women's studies. While many programs focus on language learning and are conducted in the language of the host country, many others are conducted wholly or partly in English.
Overview The State University of New York overseas study programs are, with some exceptions, open to all SUNY and non-SUNY students, with eligibility ranging from first year to graduate level. For many undergraduates, the best time to study abroad has traditionally been during the junior year; however, well-prepared sophomores, and occasionally freshmen, are eligible for some programs. For everyone, careful preparation and consultation with the campus Director of International Education are essential for determining where and when to go. If you have any questions, feel free to contact one of the SUNY campuses for additional assistance.
Setting Study abroad can be one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences in a college student's career. Getting to know another culture, living in a new environment, learning a new language, meeting people: all these add up to a kind of education different from what can be acquired on campus. Equally important for American students is the discovery of their own country, its customs, its traditions and values, as they come to see it from a foreign vantage point. No wonder that so many returnees from overseas study say that the experience changed their lives.
Students learn well and mature quickly when studying in a different culture. And as all regions of the world become more interdependent, it is increasingly apparent that the truly educated person is one who has had first hand acquaintance with other cultures, both as preparation for responsible citizenship and, in a more practical way, as a basis for a career. In the words of former Senator J. William Fulbright, author of the Fulbright exchange program, "perhaps the greatest power of educational exchange is the power to convert nations into peoples and to translate ideologies into human aspirations".Value Total expenses are competitive with other highly-rated study abroad programs in public and private universities across the country. Program costs are usually only slightly higher than on-campus costs of tuition, room and board (exclusive of international air fare) and in some countries expenses are actually less than they would be on campus. Study abroad students pay SUNY tuition (in-state or out-of-state, depending upon New York State residency) plus costs, which vary from program to program. Matriculated students at a State University of New York campus register on their home campus for programs offered at any other campus. They are thus able to maintain residency and eligibility for financial aid. (NOTE: Upper-division students registering at community colleges for overseas programs should consult with their registrar's office about appropriate credit.)
Most financial aid can be applied to overseas study, with the exception of some program costs and fees. For specific information students should consult the campus financial aid officer and the Director of International Education.E-mail To:studyabroad@suny.edu

AFS Intercultural Programs Year:
The school year runs from September until May with a two-week vacation in January. Most students will attend private language schools and wear uniforms. Some classes may be taught in English, others in Arabic, and subjects can usually be chosen freely, depending on the school. Attending school is an integral part of your experience and is the best way to make friends and enjoy life as an Egyptian teen. In addition, AFS Egypt offers several orientations from arrival through departure to assist you with the early stages of adjustments, cultural issues, and sharing of experiences. It is also likely that you will have many opporuntities to travel and explore with your host family, school, a community organization, or local chapter of AFS Egypt.
Overview AFS-USA works toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.
Setting Egypt is the most populous country in the Arab world and the second-most populous on the African Continent. Today, the "cradle of civilization", as Egypt is known, embraces a unique social mix, incorporating modern Islam and Christianity, Middle Eastern art and folk cultures, and Western music and films into its two millenia-long history. Because 90% of Egypt is desert, almost everyone lives close to the Nile. Nearly all of the country's 70 million people live in Cairo and Alexandria; elsewhere on the banks of the Nile; in the Nile delta, which fans out north of Cairo; and along the Suez Canal. In sprawling, cacophonous Cairo, robes are as common as Levis, donkeys share roadways with BMWs, and buildings made of mud stand next to glass-and-steel high-rises.
