Overview The Business and Culture program at the CIEE Study Center in Sao Paulo aims to help students develop skills and competency in Portuguese while studying issues related to business in Brazil and Latin America.

Setting The Escola de Administracao de Empresas de Sao Paulo da Fundacao Getulio Vargas (FGV) was founded in 1954 through a joint effort of the Brazilian government and the Brazilian business community, with cooperation from Michigan State University, to meet the needs and demands for business education in Brazil. FGV has worldwide recognition as a highly reputable private college focused on business administration and economics. FGV is a private non-profit business school that has more than 70 international partner schools and has an international student body.

Institute for Shipboard Education - Semester at Sea Administered by the nonprofit Institute for Shipboard Education, Semester at Sea® is a program that takes approximately 600 students--from colleges and universities across the United States and abroad--around the world each fall, spring and summer semester. The University of Virginia is the program's academic sponsor.
Overview Since 1963, over 45,000 students have studied and traveled to 60 countries around the world during fall and spring semesters through this program. A regional 65-day summer program also takes students to countries in the Pacific Rim, Latin America or Europe and the Mediterranean.
Setting Semester at Sea offers two voyages each year that circumnavigate the earth, and one that is more regional in focus. The fall terms typically begin in Ensenada, Mexico, and end in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, while the winter/spring terms generally begin in Nassau, Bahamas, and end in San Diego, California or Seattle, Washington. Our 65-day regional summer program takes students to countries within the Pacific Rim, Latin America or Europe and the Mediterranean.

State University of New York (SUNY) The State University of New York (SUNY) currently offers more than 400 overseas study programs in more than 50 countries: in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Programs range from 2-3 week intensive courses to a semester or academic year abroad. Courses are available in more than 100 subjects, ranging alphabetically from aboriginal studies and aerospace engineering to western philosophy and women's studies. While many programs focus on language learning and are conducted in the language of the host country, many others are conducted wholly or partly in English.
Overview The State University of New York overseas study programs are, with some exceptions, open to all SUNY and non-SUNY students, with eligibility ranging from first year to graduate level. For many undergraduates, the best time to study abroad has traditionally been during the junior year; however, well-prepared sophomores, and occasionally freshmen, are eligible for some programs. For everyone, careful preparation and consultation with the campus Director of International Education are essential for determining where and when to go. Setting Study abroad can be one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences in a college student's career. Getting to know another culture, living in a new environment, learning a new language, meeting people: all these add up to a kind of education different from what can be acquired on campus. Equally important for American students is the discovery of their own country, its customs, its traditions and values, as they come to see it from a foreign vantage point. Students learn well and mature quickly when studying in a different culture. And as all regions of the world become more interdependent, it is increasingly apparent that the truly educated person is one who has had first hand acquaintance with other cultures, both as preparation for responsible citizenship and, in a more practical way, as a basis for a career. In the words of former Senator J. William Fulbright, author of the Fulbright exchange program, "perhaps the greatest power of educational exchange is the power to convert nations into peoples and to translate ideologies into human aspirations".Value Total expenses are competitive with other highly-rated study abroad programs in public and private universities across the country. Program costs are usually only slightly higher than on-campus costs of tuition, room and board (exclusive of international air fare) and in some countries expenses are actually less than they would be on campus. Study abroad students pay SUNY tuition (in-state or out-of-state, depending upon New York State residency) plus costs, which vary from program to program. Matriculated students at a State University of New York campus register on their home campus for programs offered at any other campus. They are thus able to maintain residency and eligibility for financial aid. (NOTE: Upper-division students registering at community colleges for overseas programs should consult with their registrar's office about appropriate credit.)

SUNY at New Paltz SUNY New Paltz Study Abroad program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is conducted by the PUC-Rio University, a fully accredited university that issues all transcripts. Students are expected to carry a full-time academic load (12-15 undergraduate credits per semester) and will be offered variety of courses to choose from toward their degree.
Overview All foreign students are required to study Portuguese. The Department of Letters offers Portuguese for Foreigners in regular and intensive courses. A placement test indicates the appropriate level for each student.

Setting Universidade Catolica do Salvador (UCSal), established in 1961, is the highest ranking private university in northeast Brazil. The university offers courses in many departments including communications, history, geography, biology, mathematics, education, and music. The UCSal campus is housed in renovated monasteries and modern day buildings that include computer rooms and cafeterias. Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) is ranked as one of Brazil's top ten universities. It has 58 departments for undergraduate majors and 18,000 students. UFBA is situated near the downtown area and Pelourinho.

Overview The three main goals of this program are to improve students' oral and written Portuguese language skills; to facilitate students' knowledge of contemporary Brazil and the Sao Paulo region; and to provide students with the opportunity to take a broad range of courses at a Brazilian university.
Setting Sao Paulo is a multi-cultural city of more than 17 million people. It is the second largest urban area in the Americas and an important South American economic and cultural center. Sao Paulo has a modern subway system, well-designed shopping malls, beautiful parks, nightlife, and open air fruit and flower markets. Sao Paulo is often compared to New York City because of its distinct ethnic neighborhoods and excellent cultural venues. The city offers numerous entertainment opportunities (such as samba, tango shows, and Carnival) and is only two hours from Brazil's beautiful beaches. The Pontificia Universidade Catolica de Sao Paulo (PUC), established in 1946, is ranked among the top universities in Brazil and enrolls 19,000 undergraduates. PUC maintains a strong research tradition, a unique characteristic among private institutions of higher learning in Brazil. The PUC campus is located in a residential area near downtown Sao Paulo's famous Avenida Paulista with good transportation access. The university neighborhood provides numerous services and facilities for students such as gyms, bookstores, and cafes. The CIEE office is located two blocks from the PUC campus.

English Teaching Abroad English training opportunities in Brazil. Positions offered for Language Schools and High School/Secondary Schools. This is a English as a Second Language training program in Brazil. The Candidates MUST be high school graduates. It is not necessary that they have completed college or that they already have a teaching certificate in TESL or another English Program. However, those who do will be given priority over those who do not. Applicants cannot be younger than 18 or older than 35.

International Honors Program A small group of students and faculty will travel to 3 countries to explore issues related to urban planning, politics, economics and environments (both social and ecological). Study in traditional settings is complemented by on-site comparisons of policy and social movements. Students will earn 16 credits over the semester.
Overview This program combines an innovative urban studies curriculum with fieldwork involving public agencies, planners, elected officials, public/private partnerships, NGOs and grassroots groups. Students will learn how "to read a city" with leadership from faculty and from their own on-site observations.
Setting Students and faculty will travel to 3 countries and numerous cities while engaged in an interdisciplinary, comparative study of urban social, political, economic and environmental issues. Students are hosted by families or villages to ensure exposure to each country's people and culture.

Antioch College Established in 1989, AEA's Brazilian Ecosystems Program is the only study abroad program that enables students to engage in field studies across a variety of biomes in Brazil. Two months of intensive field studies throughout Brazil are followed by a month-long science internship participating in a research team project, assisting an educational program or volunteering with an environmental agency project.
Overview The curriculum is built around four courses: (1) Ecology and Biodiversity of Brazil, (2) Brazilian Natural Resource Management, (3) Portuguese Language, and (4) Field Internship.
