Overview The goal of the program is to provide a challenging curriculum that exposes students to the rich cultural heritage of Prague, a society embracing its transformation. Setting Because of its innumerable characteristic steeples, Prague is called the hundredtowered city. The newly joined EU member is a perfect example of the tumultuous and steady development of a society—most recently transitioning from its communist past. Even though the population is only 1.2 million, Prague has an unusually rich cultural life: festivals, operas, concerts, and cultural programs, and many of these events are accessible on a student budget. Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS) - Murray State University (MSU) As the "heart of Europe," Prague provides an ideal location for the study of European art and political history in the context of the Holy Roman Empire. Prague is also particularly well-suited for the examination of the transition from east-to-west and cross-cultural exchange in Europe.

Overview KIIS Prague is a five-week program open to students of sophomore and higher status who are in good academic standing. Students may register for one or two courses (3 credit hours each). Organized excursions include Prague castle, the Old Jewish cemetery, the Old-New Synagogue of Josefov, the Nazi concentration camp in Terezin, and southern Bohemia.

Setting Prague is noted for its art and architecture, which fluidly incorporates styles from the Romanesque period through the present. It is an important center of music, literature, theater, and commerce. Historically, it represents either the western-most reaches of the Slavs or the eastern-most reach of western influence since Charlemagne.

Western Michigan University The culmination of more than a decade of cooperation with Prague's Charles University, the Prague Summer Program offers writers, photographers and students of culture from a variety of backgrounds the opportunity to be mentored by some of the biggest names in contemporary English-language literature and world photography, as well as by luminaries of Central European culture.

Overview The eager novice and the seasoned professional alike are mentored with equal seriousness and respect. For the month of July participants will be members of a unique and vital community of artists and students of art and culture. Unmarked by the wars and brutal occupations it has suffered, Prague is considered by many the most beautiful European city. If indeed Prague has been "the Left Bank of the '90s," as has been asserted in the world media, the Prague Summer Program has contributed significantly to that lofty designation.

Setting All classes are conducted at the Charles University Faculty of Arts main building on Jana Palacha Square, just a few blocks from Prague's gorgeous Old Town Square and with views of Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral. Participants will be housed at the Masaryk facility in Prague 6, an easy metro or tram ride from Charles University. Each participant also receives a pass valid on all forms of Prague's excellent municipal transportation system for the duration of the program.

Value Earn 3 to 7 hours of undergraduate or graduate credit. Program also open to non-matriculating students. Creative writing and photography scholarships available. Four writers selected as fellows, who attend the program tuition-free.
