Overview The goals of the program are fourfold: to offer students the opportunity to live and study in a French-speaking West African country; to introduce students to Senegalese society and gain an understanding of issues such as education, women's roles and the impact of development and globalization from a West African perspective; to enable students to develop and/or acquire foreign language skills in French and Wolof; and to provide opportunities for cultural immersion through living with a Senegalese family and participating in a community service project or internship.

Setting The CIEE Study Center in Dakar is operated in conjunction with three host institutions: Suffolk University-Dakar Campus, Universite Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) and the Baobab Center. The CIEE Study Center office is located at Suffolk University's Dakar campus and language instruction and CIEE area studies courses take place at Suffolk. Additional area studies courses are taught at the Baobab Center, a cultural resource and training center operated by Africa Consultants International. Spring semester or academic year students with advanced French language skills may enroll in courses at UCAD.
Value CIEE fees for 2006 - 07 include tuition, housing, meals, optional airport meet and greet, a supplemental food stipend, orientation, cultural activities such as visits to Toubab Dialaw, a fishing village; and an artist's colony, membership to cultural and/or resource centers, the UCAD library, insurance, and pre-departure advising.

Living Routes Study Abroad Engage with ecovillagers and indigenous peoples on topics of sustainable development and ecotourism. Explore theories and practice measuring indicators of sustainable development. Learn Appreciative Inquiry (AI) research methods and travel to several ancient Senegalese villages. Setting EcoYoff is a 600 year-old fishing village, within Dakar, that is striving to develop sustainably. Visit pre-industrial communities and participate in traditional agriculture and food preparation. Learn to play the diembe drums, or to dance the royal Diagalde, and the Ndawrabin, ocean dance of the Lebou fishing villages.

SIT Study Abroad Senegal plays a key role in West Africa's arts, culture, and politics, despite its small size and population. Led to independence by internationally acclaimed poet and philosopher Leopold Senghor, Senegal has throughout its history emphasized the role of arts and culture in society.
Overview Intensive Language Study: French; Arts and Culture Seminar: Senegalese Life and Culture, Arts and Culture, and Educational Excursions/Rural Visits; Field Study Seminar; and Independent Study Project. (16 credits in total)
Setting The program is based in Dakar, an exciting cosmopolitan city, juts into the ocean on the Cap Vert peninsula. 5 weeks homestay in Dakar and 1 week in a rural location. The program includes field trips to Saint Louis, the Petite Cote, Goree Island, Lac Rose, and Eastern Senegal.

Beloit College Sudy the distinctive French African culture with English and French-speaking African students at Universit Cheikh Anta Diop, in Dakar, the largest and reputed to be the finest university in francophone Africa. Students live with French-speaking families, and become a part of the family s daily routine.
Overview Along with courses in French African culture and its distinct literature, students also take a class in Wolof (one of the major ethnic languages). French fluency above the intermediate level is required for the program.
Setting Home to more than 1 million inhabitants, Dakar is a cosmopolitan city located at the westernmost tip of Senegal and of Africa. Nearby destinations are the former capital St. Louis, bird and animal sanctuaries, tropical rain forests and Gor e Island, a staging point for the 18th and 19th century slave trade.

Hamline University Exhange students enroll and are taught alongside Senegalese students. Living on-campus, students are provided with a wide variety of fields of study and very active student life.
Overview Students are required to take a full load of courses, and must have two years of college-level French with previous study in high school. Coursework is available in a unique variety of courses and areas of study.
Setting St. Louis is a historic French colonial city near the Senegal River. Today it is a lively African town, with a bustling marketplace and an annual international jazz festival. The Universite Gaston Berger is located on a spacious campus some 14 kilometers from the center of town, the Sahelian architectural style blends into the landscape. There are almost 2,000 students at UGB.
Value Students are housed on campus, sharing dormitory room suites with Senegalese students. The UGB dorms are organized in "villages" around a central yard, and much of student life, with frequesnt sporting and cultural events, revolves around the residence halls. Studenst will receive a monthly stipend for meals; there are cafeterias, snack bars, and small restaurants on campus, as well as numerous nice restaurants in town. Students pay Hamline tuition to cover the cost of the program.

Senecorps English Teachers are needed immediately for all grades (Pre-K through Highschool) for the 2006-2007 school year. Class size ranges from 15-35.
Overview Contracts are for one 1 or 2 semesters with the possibility to stay longer.Senegal has two academic semesters a year: October - December and February-July. Applicants who can commit at least 1 year are preferred. Program Open to: All adults over the age of 18; seniors and retired educators are encouraged to apply. No prior experience is required. Living Arrangments: Homestays with local families Program Dates: The programs are flexible for some locations.
Setting Volunteers will receive the support of their colleagues for lessons plans and teaching curriculum. Some schools desire volunteers to teach evening or weekend courses to faculty members. This opportunity is ideal for professionals on sabbatical; students in between degrees or just wanting some time off to live, learn, and contribute to a community abroad; retired inviduals; individuals with a sincere desire and the patience to make a difference in the lives of others.
Value Although all teachers are unpaid volunteers, this is an unvaluable opportunity to live and work in a peaceful, French speaking country on the coast of West Africa. Although the national language is French, the Ministry of Education has begun a campaign to introduce English Language classes beginning in the Primary Grades. Everyone, from street vendors to national officials, realizes how important a good grasp of the English Language is if the Senegalese are to remain competitive. Serving as a Senecorps English Teacher will allow this poor nation to meet its objectives and empower its citizens with the tools needed to participate in a global economy.
