Institute for Shipboard Education - Semester at Sea Administered by the nonprofit Institute for Shipboard Education, Semester at Sea® is a program that takes approximately 600 students--from colleges and universities across the United States and abroad--around the world each fall, spring and summer semester. The University of Virginia is the program's academic sponsor.

Overview Since 1963, over 45,000 students have studied and traveled to 60 countries around the world during fall and spring semesters through this program. A regional 65-day summer program also takes students to countries in the Pacific Rim, Latin America or Europe and the Mediterranean.

Setting Semester at Sea offers two voyages each year that circumnavigate the earth, and one that is more regional in focus. The fall terms typically begin in Ensenada, Mexico, and end in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, while the winter/spring terms generally begin in Nassau, Bahamas, and end in San Diego, California or Seattle, Washington. Our 65-day regional summer program takes students to countries within the Pacific Rim, Latin America or Europe and the Mediterranean.

SEA Education Association Focusing on deep-water oceanographic studies, students undertake coursework ashore in oceanography, nautical science and maritime literature and history, followed by a practical component of hands-on marine science and blue-water sailing at sea.

Overview Students will receive a broad understanding of the world's oceans through an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines the sciences, social sciences, humanities and public policy.

Setting If you are looking for an educational adventure in a study-abroad program, you won't find anything like us anywhere in the world. We take college students to the deep ocean on a traditional sailing vessel to learn about the sea.

Sea-mester A unique educational adventure set aboard traditionally rigged schooners while voyaging throughout the world's oceans. Student's may select to sail the near coastal waters of the Caribbean Sea or cross a major ocean, such as the Indian, Atlantic or Pacific. Sea-mester is fully accredited. Based upon principles of experiential education, the primary academic foci of oceanography, marine biology, nautical science, and leadership are brought from the textbook into real life application.

Setting Dependent upon location. S/Y Ocean Star operates in the Caribbean Basin. S/Y Argo circumnavigates the globe over a two-year period. Voyage duration ranges from 20 to 90 days.

The Scholar Ship A consortium of leading, world-class universities contribute to The Scholar Ship's programming, oversee the quality of its academic offerings, and ensure that it adheres to the most rigorous academic standards. Students enhance their experience through participation in three elements of our Port Program: Academic Field Programs; Shore Excursions; and Independent Travel. Our transnational learning community integrates academic, cultural, and social experiences in programs that enhance students' personal and professional development.

Overview The Scholar Ship is a semester-long academic program aboard a dedicated passenger ship that traverses the globe as an oceangoing campus. Students and staff from around the world together form a transnational learning community designed to develop their intercultural competencies and leadership skills.

Setting Itineraries vary from voyage to voyage, but all are planned to provide engaging learning experiences through our port program that complement the curriculum onboard. Our oceangoing campus serves as the backdrop for continuous transcultural encounters that would be virtually impossible to replicate on land-based campuses.

Value Today's global organizations are seeking young professionals with genuine international experience and the ability to operate successfully across cultural, political and linguistic boundaries. The Scholar Ship's curriculum has been designed to develop the intercultural competencies and leadership skills of our students.

ActionQuest Summer Programs Worldwide sailing and diving adventures for teenagers. Shipmates live aboard sailing yachts for three weeks, earning sailing and scuba certifications with marine biology, water skiing, windsurfing and nautical skills. / Teen, summer live aboard program offering advanced certifications in scuba diving form PADI Advanced Open Water through to the professional Divemaster certification.

Setting Full-time live-aboard programs. Participants live on 50-foot sailing yachts for three-week voyages. Programs offered in Caribbean, Mediterranean, Galapagos, Australia and South Pacific.

Class Afloat Class Afloat is dedicated to educating a community of young people, preparing minds,values and ethics for responsible global citizenship in the 21st century. Drawing upon the social dynamics of life and work in the microcosm of a sailing ship, and first-hand explorations in the macrocosm of the planet, Class Afloat students forge new standards in leadership, personal development and academic excellence.

Setting The S.V Concordia was constructed in 1992 and maintains the highest standards for vessels of this Class. Accommodation is, by tall ship standards, very comfortable: a/c four-berth cabin with en suite head, shower and sink.

Seascape Research and Education Participants will join a crew of experienced sailors, talented professionals and creative students aboard the tall ship "EMPIRE SANDY" for an experience of a lifetime! A "flag ship" in the defense of Mother Earth, this 200 ft schooner offers a unique opportunity to promote understanding between diverse cultures and disciplines, while supporting important local efforts of environmental protection in the beautiful islands of the Grenadines, West Indies.

Overview EARTHSHIP supports training and/or opportunities for independent study/projects in a diverse range of disciplines including Marine Sciences and Management, environmental tourism, youth education, ethology, caribbean history and culture, terrestrial biology, (a special focus on) Geographic Information Systems and more, with a primary objective of exploring the inter-relationships between these disciplines using the islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines as the subject of study. All participants also receive tall ship crew training,with additional training opportunities in SCUBA, Freediving, Sailing, health and fitness, and more.

Setting EARTHSHIP finds its home port in the tiny island of Bequia,located in the country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The island of St. Vincent, and the islands of the Grenadines, represent one of the most beautiful and naturally diverse areas of the Caribbean, and offers a unique variety of Caribbean culture.

Value EARTHSHIP provides a rich atmosphere which promotes opportunities for self-exploration, experience in different disciplines, interaction with a diverse group of individuals, experience of the local culture. EARTHSHIP is unique in that all efforts are applied...i.e. are applicable to the local area and add to the continual development of local environmental protection and youth development. The Scholar Ship "Bringing the world to you." The Scholar Ship traverses the world, calling on approximately eight ports on five continents over the course of a 16-week semester. Each port presents extensive educational and experiential opportunities popular among students who seek a unique experience not found in single-destination programs.

Overview The Scholar Ship was developed to complement the educational objectives of many students today who understand the importance of gaining a competitive edge through an intercultural experience.The Scholar Ship provides both undergraduate and postgraduate students with a distinct opportunity to pursue their studies in an intercultural context.

Setting You will be learning alongside students from all over the world as you travel aboard a passenger ship to eight countries. Your experience is enhanced by the perspective each student shares from his or her own culture. Classroom learning, experiential activities, and residential programs are key elements of community life aboard The Scholar Ship not common to traditional land-based programs.

Value As the nature of work and study rapidly takes on a global dimension, employers are increasingly seeking employees who have demonstrated the ability to successfully operate across cultural, political, and linguistic boundaries. West Island College International Take full advantage of the opportunity to learn the skills of sailling one of the world's most elegant tallships, the S.V. Concordia. Whether 15 or 115, as long as you are fit, you can participate in a glorious Alaskan cruise.

Overview Participants, at their own discretion, will join regular mariner's watches and trake part in a variety of sail manoeuvres. Interest courses in photo-journalism, management and seamanship will help fill the days underway.
