Global Learning Semesters, Inc. The Semester in Iberia and Morocco: Europe and Islam program is focused on the influence and interaction between Iberia (Spain and Portugal) and North Africa from the Moorish period through to the present.
Overview Students attend a combination of Spanish language and Spanish history and culture courses at the University of Alcala, with a special emphasis on the Islamic/Moorish influence on Spain. This program is well-suited for students studying broad trends in European or Islamic history and culture or students who would like a deeper and unique view of Iberia and North Africa.
Setting Alcala de Henares, our home base, is an ideal location to study abroad, with a historical, friendly small town atmosphere and easy access to downtown Madrid. Coursework is supplemented with educational travel and field experiences through southern Spain, Morocco and Portugal.
Value Our programs are a superb value. The program fee provides for all tuition, academic fees, housing, in-country travel in Spain, medical insurance and use of a local cell phone. Overview The Scholar Ship is a semester-long academic program aboard a dedicated passenger ship that traverses the globe as an oceangoing campus. Students and staff from around the world together form a transnational learning community designed to develop their intercultural competencies and leadership skills.
Setting Itineraries vary from voyage to voyage, but all are planned to provide engaging learning experiences through our port program that complement the curriculum onboard. Our oceangoing campus serves as the backdrop for continuous transcultural encounters that would be virtually impossible to replicate on land-based campuses.

Overview The goals of this program are to develop skills and competency in Portuguese language through a semester-long language course; to enhance students' understanding of contemporary Portuguese society and culture through the CIEE core curriculum; and, where language skills permit; to meet a wide variety of students' academic interests through direct matriculation at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
Setting Lisbon is the westernmost capital in mainland Europe, at the point where the Tagus River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Rich in history yet very hip, the city presents interesting contrasts, from tiny one-of-a-kind shops with fading facades, to several mega malls; from narrow, steep, cobbled-stoned streets to wide-open vistas. The Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) is a public institution of higher learning founded in 1973 with the goal of contributing to the renewal of higher education in Portugal.
Value CIEE fees for 2007 - 2008 include tuition, housing and meals, optional on-site airport meet and greet, orientation, transportation pass, cultural activities, field trips, insurance, and pre-departure advising.

Soulaz Communications From lush pine fairy-tale forests to white sand beaches, Portugal offers a varied landscape in a compact little country. Often lumped together with Spanish, Portuguese is a distinct language sharing vocabulary with Spanish, grammar with Italian, and pronunciation with Arabic. This fusion of many cultures is reflected in the Portuguese people, who are lucky enough to enjoy one of the most liberal societies in Europe, while maintaining their traditions.
Setting In Lisbon, there are only two directions, uphill and downhill. This graceful city, with its centuries old winding streets of the old Moorish quarter to the trendy shops and of the moment clubs of the grid-laid Barrio Alto, makes an ideal location to study the Portuguese language.

University of Wisconsin - Madison Students will attend the Portuguese Language and Culture program for international students at the Universidad de Coimbra.
Setting Approximately 17,000 students take classes at the university's hill-top campus overlooking the Mondego River.

University of Wisconsin - Madison The Portuguese Language and Culture program has three different levels: elementary, intermediate, and advanced. Upon arrival, a placement exam is give to determine the appropriate level. Most students have been placed in the intermediate level. Academic year participants may have an additional language test in January, which may permit students to advance in level. Students with advanced language skills may register for one or two courses in humanities or social science at Universidade de Coimbra.
Overview At the Universidade de Coimbra, students will have the opportunity to study Portuguese language and culture, learn through travel experiences, and choose the housing that fits their needs. Additionally, students will benefit from social events with Portuguese students and have a resident director to assist and advise them throughout the program
Setting Coimbra features many exquisite cathedrals, monasteries, parks, and gardens. The city is famous for its twisting streets, terraced houses and fado music. With a population of approximately 100,000, Coimbra provides both an intimate and a stimulating environment in which to live and study.
Value Coimbra is located in Portugal’s Costa de Prate, “Silver Coast,” which offers a variety of beautiful beaches, charming towns, unspoiled villages, monuments, temples, castles, palaces, and museums. Students will have an opportunity to study and live in a wonderful location with great historical depth. Additionally, several excursions to places such as Oporto and Lisbon are included in the program fee.
