Where: Niamey in Niger
When: Fall Semester, Spring Semester
Boston University Division of International Programs Niamey International Development Program offers a semester or academic year in Niamey, Niger. The program combines the study of language and society in West Africa s Sahel region with individual community placements that examine Niger s culture and ongoing development efforts. The program is offered in cooperation with the Facult des Lettres et Sciences Humaines de l Universit Abdou Moumouni. Courses are taught by Nigerien, American, and other affiliated educators.
Overview Course Work(16-20 credits) Following orientation, all students enroll in a core course on Nigerien or West African cultural and social issues, two language courses (French, Hausa, Zarma), and a four-credit community placement. Students may enroll in one language course without credit. Several elective courses are also available.
Setting Students are housed in communal apartments at the Centre de Formation des Cadres d Alphabetisation (CFCA), near the Niamey city center. This living arrangement, a truly Sahelian experience, forms the core of the program and provides one of its greatest learning experiences. Additionally, students may choose to live with a Nigerien family for one week.
Value The program fee includes tuition, housing, board, field trips, and round-trip group airfare from designated U.S. cities. Financial and is available.
