Augsburg College - Center for Global Education Nation Building, Globalization, and Decolonizing the Mind learns from Namibia and South Africa as they struggle to build a multicultural nation and deal with the legacies of apartheid and colonialism. Includes travel to rural Namibia and South Africa.

Overview This experiential program includes meetings with many guest lecturers, field trips to northern Namibia, Swakopmund, Botswana, and South Africa. Internship and volunteer opportunities.

Setting The program is based in Windhoek, Namibia, a modern city of 200,000 located in the geographical center of the country. The climate is dry but pleasant, with an average high temperature ranging from 68 to 86 degrees.

Rutgers University - Study Abroad Students are fully matriculated at the University of Namibia in Southern Africa. / Rutgers' Center for African Studies works in conjunction with Kokribitey School to determine the curriculum for the semester.

Overview Right in the city, the University of Namibia is almost as young as its country, full of energy and commitment. Just like your Namibian peers, the full range of courses offered will be open to you.

Setting As the capital of a newly independent country, Windhoek is a thriving modern city, with upscale hotels, fine dining, and a lively cultural scene. Handcrafted specialties like distinctive jewelry and hand-woven carpets are easy to find. You can still see German colonial influence in the older architecture, but most places today have a laid-back style all Windhoek's own. If you're the restless type, you'll love the variety of inexpensive trips you can plan while you're there. From safaris to scuba diving, Namibia has some of the best adventure travel in the world, and living there may be the best adventure of all!

Value You are expected to enroll as a full-time student as defined by the University of Namibia. You generally earn the equivalent of 12 to 15 Rutgers University credits for the term.

Namibia Desert Rhino Conservation Project

Round River Conservation Studies This project is assisting the Save the Rhino Trust in the desert of northwestern Namibia in their ecological and community conservation efforts to decrease the threat to the black rhino and desert elephants of the region.

Overview Students assist local rhino game guards in conducting black rhino censuses and tracking, as well as work on wildlife and bird diversity studies, and rhino habitat utilization models.

Setting The area in northwestern Namibia referred to Damaraland, for its local inhabitants, is one of the most striking landscapes on earth. This region is adjacent to the Namib Desert and Skeleton Coast to the immediate west, and the acacia-dominated scrubland of central Namibia to the east.
