SIT Study Abroad With its blend of tribal heritage and Islamic influence, lively cities and mud-walled mosques, Mali provides a fascinating opportunity for you to study the effects of development initiatives on a nation attempting to preserve its unique cultural identity and address gender roles within traditional and modern contexts.

Overview Intensive Language Study: French; Gender and Development Seminar: Malian Life and Culture, Gender and Development, Village Stay, and Educational Excursions; Field Study Seminar; and Independent Study Project (16 credits in total).

Setting Six weeks homestay in Bamako and a one-week village stay. The program includes visits to the Niger River towns of Segou and Mopti, to fabled Djenne and to Dogon villages along the Bandiagara cliffs, in order to give a fuller sense of the variety of cultures and ways of life in Mali.

Antioch College A positive yet realistic immersion in and exposure to the culture and art if Mali. Students will have the unique opportunity to become familiar with traditional and modern Malian life, and to apprentice with an artist, artisan or musician in accordance with their own particular goals and interests.

Overview This unique field-study program uses visual and performing arts to develop cross-cultural understanding, critical thinking, and a foundation for better understanding of both American and Malian culture. The program consists of four courses: Culture and Contemporary Life in Mali, Aesthetic Traditions of Mali, Apprenticeship/Arts Practicum, and French Language Intensive.
