The African Studies and Swahili Language program emphasizes Swahili language training, African history, culture, literature, sociology, economics, and environmental studies. Students take up to 16 credits per semester -- a Swahili language course and 2 "ASSL" core courses are required (other courses are optional).
Overview KEI's African Studies program in Kenya offers students the opportunity to learn about Kenya, Kenya's language (Swahili), and the African continent -- all in the beautiful environment of the 20-acre USIU campus. All courses are taught in English (except for language courses).
Setting The program is based at the United States International University (USIU), the largest private, secular university in Kenya. It is a multinational institution of higher learning, located in Nairobi, with 2,300 students enrolled from around the world.
Value The program includes a wide selection of subject-specific courses in English, professional visits, internship placement, field trips and a wildlife safari, cultural activities, housing in residence halls on campus, pre-departure and on-site support, airport welcome and transfer, mobile phone, and travel and medical insurance. Nairobi is Kenya's political capital, and it's principal economic and cultural center. It is a commercial hub for all of East Africa, and a major diplomatic post on the continent. With USIU faculty and students from nearly 50 different countries (most from Africa), it is an excellent envornment in which to study African Studies.

The Swahili developed an extensive commercial network of seafaring communities along Africa s Indian Ocean, linking Asia and the Middle East with the African continent. Contemporary Kenyan coastal cultures, while influenced by more recent migrations and interactions, continue to draw heavily upon these roots.

Setting Mombasa, the heart of Kenya s commercial and cultural connections to other Indian Ocean ports, is an ideal base from which to explore Kenya s coastal cultures. Off the coast, the Indian Ocean is dotted with traditional wooden dhows, bringing the fresh catch of the day to the open-air market, as nearby, the 400-year-old great stone edifice of Fort Jesus watches over the ancient port. An extended stay in Lamu an island community rich in Islamic tradition and home to a more than 1,000-year-old society adds to your understanding of East African coastal life.
