Ghana: History and Cultures of the African Diaspora Five hundred years ago, the Portuguese arrived on the coast of West Africa looking for gold. They found it in the area of present-day Ghana, declaring the region the Gold Coast. However, subsequent trade slavery was far more sinister. For 250 years, European powers competed fiercely for this lucrative trade, building numerous forts against their rivals. By the time the British outlawed slavery in the early nineteenth century, forts and castles dominated the Ghanaian coast, averaging one every four miles. Despite this tragic part of their past, Ghanaians have maintained a vibrant cultural heritage and are interested in sharing it with others.
