Carson-Newman College English Language Institute The English Language Institute at Carson-Newman College offers an intensive English as a Second Language program for international students who wish to improve their English language skills to the level needed to enter colleges and universities in the United States. The ELI program provides 25 hours per week of formal instruction in the four skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, listening, as well as grammar and computer instruction.

Overview Students who successfully complete the top level of the ELI program are normally admitted without any additional requirements to the undergraduate program, and, after completing one semester in that program, receive 12 semester hours of foreign language credit for their ELI studies. The presence on campus of a master's level program in Teaching English as a Second Language greatly enhances the quality of our English Language Institute by offering contact with a large number of graduate students who have successfully acquired English as their own second language.
