SUNY at New Paltz The East and Central European Studies Program (ECES) is especially designed program for undergraduate students who specialize or are interested in East and Central European Studies.

Overview The ECES offers a semester of course study that includes an obligatory two-week intensive Czech language course followed by semester courses. Language courses are organized from beginner through advanced levels according to the level of competence of the participants.

Czech Republic: Arts, Community, and Transition This program examines the history of the Czech nation, focusing on the key issues of the twentieth century, including the formation of the Czechoslovak republic, its political and social division during and after World War II, the influence of Communism, and the post-revolutionary period, in which poets and artists assumed the reins of power.

Overview Intensive Language Study: Czech; Arts and Social Change Seminar: Czech History and Politics, Arts and Social Change, and Educational Excursions; Field Study Seminar; and Independent Study Project. (16 credits in total) 12 weeks homestay in Prague. The program generally includes field trips to neighboring countries for a comparative study of Central Europe. Excursions to neighboring regions in the Czech Republic include such cities as Cesky Krumlov, Terezin, Karlstejin, Kutna Hora, and Znojmo.

Setting The program is based in Prague, a lively and architecturally stunning city. This aesthetically vital setting forms a living laboratory for the study of the interaction between historical forces and the arts in Czech society.
