Knowledge Exchange Institute
Chinese Language, Culture, and Humanities Hosted by the University of International Business and Economics (China's leading school for international business, law, and public relations). Classes are taught in English (and/or Mandarin for those with appropriate language skills), and extensive excursions are included.
Overview Emphasizes intensive Mandarin language training, using an immersion stragey, and required language classes taught as a unit. KEI students take written and oral language classes as well as an Asian Studies Seminar.
Setting The University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) has one of China's oldest programs for teaching Chinese as a Second Language. UIBE enrolls 20,000 Chinese and international students, and is located in the center of Beijing.

Boston University Division of International Programs This intensive nine-week program offers Chinese-language study at all levels and provides a comprehensive introduction to China through study of its spoken and written language. The core curriculum centers on 16 to 20 hours a week of language instruction, emphasizing grammar, oral comprehension, and speaking.
Overview Students register for two of the following courses, for a total of eight credits: LC 111 First-Semester Chinese, LC 112 Second-Semester Chinese, LC 211 Third-Semester Chinese, LC 212 Fourth-Semester Chinese, LC 311 Third-Year Chinese I, LC 312 Third-Year Chinese II, LC 411 Fourth-Year Chinese I, LC 412 Fourth-Year Chinese II
The curriculum is augmented by a rich mixture of extracurricular activities and field trips. A midterm trip to Qingdao, Pingyao, or another nearby city is included in the cost of the program. Students also participate in a one-week post-program tour. Tours in recent years have included Datong, Xian, and a Yangtze river trip. In addition, each student is matched with a host family in Beijing with whom they attend various cultural activities throughout the city.
Setting Students live in single or double rooms in a dormitory on the BIEcampus. All dormitories are air conditioned, and each suite or room has its own direct telephone line.
Value Per semester cost includes tuition, room and board, books, visa fees, medical insurance and emergency evacuation insurance, program-related field trips and activities, and limited cultural reimbursement. Financial aid is available.

State University of New York (SUNY) The State University of New York (SUNY) currently offers more than 400 overseas study programs in more than 50 countries: in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Programs range from 2-3 week intensive courses to a semester or academic year abroad. Courses are available in more than 100 subjects, ranging alphabetically from aboriginal studies and aerospace engineering to western philosophy and women's studies. While many programs focus on language learning and are conducted in the language of the host country, many others are conducted wholly or partly in English.
Overview The State University of New York overseas study programs are, with some exceptions, open to all SUNY and non-SUNY students, with eligibility ranging from first year to graduate level. For many undergraduates, the best time to study abroad has traditionally been during the junior year; however, well-prepared sophomores, and occasionally freshmen, are eligible for some programs. For everyone, careful preparation and consultation with the campus Director of International Education are essential for determining where and when to go. Setting Study abroad can be one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences in a college student's career. Getting to know another culture, living in a new environment, learning a new language, meeting people: all these add up to a kind of education different from what can be acquired on campus. Equally important for American students is the discovery of their own country - its customs, its traditions and values as they come to see it from a foreign vantage point. Students learn well and mature quickly when studying in a different culture. And as all regions of the world become more interdependent, it is increasingly apparent that the truly educated person is one who has had first hand acquaintance with other cultures, both as preparation for responsible citizenship and, in a more practical way, as a basis for a career. In the words of former Senator J. William Fulbright, author of the Fulbright exchange program, "perhaps the greatest power of educational exchange is the power to convert nations into peoples and to translate ideologies into human aspirations."
Value Total expenses are competitive with other highly-rated study abroad programs in public and private universities across the country. Program costs are usually only slightly higher than on-campus costs of tuition, room and board (exclusive of international air fare) and in some countries expenses are actually less than they would be on campus. Study abroad students pay SUNY tuition (in-state or out-of-state, depending upon New York State residency) plus costs, which vary from program to program. Matriculated students at a State University of New York campus register on their home campus for programs offered at any other campus. They are thus able to maintain residency and eligibility for financial aid. (NOTE: Upper-division students registering at community colleges for overseas programs should consult with their registrar's office about appropriate credit.)
Most financial aid can be applied to overseas study, with the exception of some program costs and fees. For specific information students should consult the campus financial aid officer and the Director of International Education.

State University of New York College at Brockport (SUNY) This program is jointly sponsored by SUNY Brockport's Office of International Education and EducAsian. The goal of this program is to provide students from US colleges and universities the opportunity to study Chinese language, history, arts, culture, recent economic developments and social trends.
Overview Participants will study Chinese language, culture, history, art, economics, management, and finance in modern China. Participants have the option of choosing a business internship placement for the second half of the 15 week semester in place of course work.
Setting Internships are available in journalism, finance, education, environment,investment, entertainment, management and hospitality. The program takes the student through a dynamic combination of formal classroom instruction, guided excursions, and travel in three of China's most dynamic cities.
Value Upon arrival in China a language assessment test will be given to assure accurate placement. No previous experience in the Chinese language is required, but it is recommended. Eighteen undergraduate credits.

University Studies Abroad Consortium The Chengdu Program is located in one of the last homes of the Panda and is home to 55 diverse Chinese minorities.
