Overview The goals of this program are to help students of all Japanese language abilities further develop their Japanese skills and increase their knowledge about Japan and its people. Setting Sophia University is a private Jesuit institution. There are eight faculties and over 11,000 students. Program participants take courses at the Faculty of Liberal Arts. Approximately 75% of the students studying in this faculty are Japanese. Located in central Tokyo near Shinjuku, the Meiji Shrine, and the Imperial Palace, Sophia’s Yotsuya campus includes a library, computer labs, faculty and administrative offices, classrooms, and sports grounds. State University of New York (SUNY) The State University of New York (SUNY) currently offers more than 400 overseas study programs in more than 50 countries: in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Programs range from 2-3 week intensive courses to a semester or academic year abroad. Courses are available in more than 100 subjects, ranging alphabetically from aboriginal studies and aerospace engineering to western philosophy and women's studies. While many programs focus on language learning and are conducted in the language of the host country, many others are conducted wholly or partly in English.
Overview The State University of New York overseas study programs are, with some exceptions, open to all SUNY and non-SUNY students, with eligibility ranging from first year to graduate level. For many undergraduates, the best time to study abroad has traditionally been during the junior year; however, well-prepared sophomores, and occasionally freshmen, are eligible for some programs. For everyone, careful preparation and consultation with the campus Director of International Education are essential for determining where and when to go. Setting Study abroad can be one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences in a college student's career. Getting to know another culture, living in a new environment, learning a new language, meeting people: all these add up to a kind of education different from what can be acquired on campus. Program costs are usually only slightly higher than on-campus costs of tuition, room and board (exclusive of international air fare) and in some countries expenses are actually less than they would be on campus. Study abroad students pay SUNY tuition (in-state or out-of-state, depending upon New York State residency) plus costs, which vary from program to program. Matriculated students at a State University of New York campus register on their home campus for programs offered at any other campus. They are thus able to maintain residency and eligibility for financial aid. (NOTE: Upper-division students registering at community colleges for overseas programs should consult with their registrar's office about appropriate credit.)

SUNY at New Paltz Kanazawa University would like to promote cultural exchange among students from all over the world and its university. Gateway to Japan (Hawaii to Japan) In Hawaii, students learn how to transition from a Western to an Eastern culture. They live and take courses with Japanese and other Asian students at the Hawaii Tokai International College (HTIC) in Honolulu. After their 10-week multicultural experience in Hawaii, students move on to Japan for a six-week experience in a very different cultural context.
Setting In Japan, students reside at Tokai's Shonan campus, 50 minutes by train from Tokyo, where they continue daily language instruction and pursue a 3-credit independent study project under the supervision of the HTIC faculty director and participating Tokai faculty.

Tokyo Language Arts College The Tokyo Language Arts College TEFL certification courses by correspondence were designed to meet the needs of both experienced teachers of English and people just entering the teaching field. Through distance learning, teachers living in all parts of the world have the opportunity to attain a greater knowledge of Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Tufts University, Programs Abroad Office Tufts-in-Japan offers intensive Japanese language training with a selection of courses taught in English at Kanazawa University. Completion of 3 semesters of college level Japanese or the equivalent is required.

University of Illinois, Japan The Year-in-Japan Program combines intensive Japanese language training with discipline-based courses on Japan.
Overview Language courses meet 10-12 hours each week. Other courses on Japan(taught in English)are offered in a range of disciplines -- from anthropology, literature, history, to economics and business.

Setting The program is based on the campus of Konan University in the eastern part of Kobe, a short train ride from Osaka and Kyoto.

University of Kentucky, Lexington This is a six-week course for 6 credit hours. 3 weeks are spent at IEC Senmongakou conducting field research into various contemporary problems facing Japan and two weeks are spent on a Japan rail pass tour, observing selected areas from Kyushu to Hokkaido.
Overview 2-week rail trip the length of Japan. 3-Weeks Japanese classes. Many local field trips, both physical and cultural. Host families in Yatsushiro.

Westgate Corporation Westgate partially sponsors interns to do their TEFL Certification course at a Westgate decided site in Japan. Those who participate in the course would arrive in Japan on February 13th and do the 1 month course (February 19-March 16). Candidates for the course would then participate in Westgate training and begin their teaching internship at the end of April upon successful completion of the course. Interns who participate in the teaching internship must either be fulfilling a practicum requirement for a teaching credential or have recently passed their credential course. The practicum would end July 27-31 depending on the assignment of the intern.
