Overview Established in 1994, the CIEE Study Center at the University of Ghana provides an opportunity for students from all academic disciplines to live and study in Ghana, learning first - hand about the country and its people, while continuing to pursue their own academic goals. These goals are achieved through integrated study with Ghanaian students and immersion into the cultural and social life of the university and the surrounding community.

Setting As the oldest and largest of the six public universities in Ghana, the University of Ghana has an enrollment of over 23,000 students and a faculty of over 720. The university is comprised of faculties of agriculture, arts, law, medicine, science and social sciences; a school of administration; three agricultural research stations; and institutes for adult education, African studies, archival training, international relations, journalism and communication, medical research, population studies and statistical, social and economic research.

State University of New York (SUNY) The State University of New York (SUNY) currently offers more than 400 overseas study programs in more than 50 countries: in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Programs range from 2-3 week intensive courses to a semester or academic year abroad. Courses are available in more than 100 subjects, ranging alphabetically from aboriginal studies and aerospace engineering to western philosophy and women's studies. While many programs focus on language learning and are conducted in the language of the host country, many others are conducted wholly or partly in English.
Overview The State University of New York overseas study programs are, with some exceptions, open to all SUNY and non-SUNY students, with eligibility ranging from first year to graduate level. For many undergraduates, the best time to study abroad has traditionally been during the junior year; however, well-prepared sophomores, and occasionally freshmen, are eligible for some programs. For everyone, careful preparation and consultation with the campus Director of International Education are essential for determining where and when to go. Setting Study abroad can be one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences in a college student's career. Getting to know another culture, living in a new environment, learning a new language, meeting people: all these add up to a kind of education different from what can be acquired on campus. Equally important for American students is the discovery of their own country, its customs, its traditions and values, as they come to see it from a foreign vantage point. No wonder that so many returnees from overseas study say that the experience changed their lives.
Students learn well and mature quickly when studying in a different culture. And as all regions of the world become more interdependent, it is increasingly apparent that the truly educated person is one who has had first hand acquaintance with other cultures, both as preparation for responsible citizenship and, in a more practical way, as a basis for a career. In the words of former Senator J. William Fulbright, author of the Fulbright exchange program, "perhaps the greatest power of educational exchange is the power to convert nations into peoples and to translate ideologies into human aspirations".Value Total expenses are competitive with other highly-rated study abroad programs in public and private universities across the country. Program costs are usually only slightly higher than on-campus costs of tuition, room and board (exclusive of international air fare) and in some countries expenses are actually less than they would be on campus. Study abroad students pay SUNY tuition (in-state or out-of-state, depending upon New York State residency) plus costs, which vary from program to program. Matriculated students at a State University of New York campus register on their home campus for programs offered at any other campus. They are thus able to maintain residency and eligibility for financial aid. (NOTE: Upper-division students registering at community colleges for overseas programs should consult with their registrar's office about appropriate credit.)

State University of New York College at Brockport (SUNY) The University of Ghana is the oldest and largest of Ghana's five universities. Participants will have the opportunity to enroll in regular university classes at the University of Ghana.
Overview Prior to departure, participants select an individual program of study from the more than 350 courses available to overseas students.
Setting Accra has a lively nightlife, affordable restaurants, and a decidedly "non-touristy" atmosphere that makes it a real resource for the participants of this program. Housing in university residence halls.

Overview The CIEE Study Center at Ashesi University builds upon CIEE's commitment to Ghana since 1994, when the first Study Center was established. The CIEE Study Center at Ashesi University provides an opportunity for students to live and study in Ghana, learning first-hand about the country and its people, while pursuing an intensive curriculum of African studies - among other areas of study. These goals are achieved through integrated study with Ghanaian students, service-learning opportunities, and immersion into the cultural and social life of the university and the surrounding community.
Setting As one of newest higher education institutions in Ghana, Ashesi University seeks to nurture excellence in scholarship, leadership, and citizenship in pursuit of its mission "to train a new generation of ethical and entrepreneurial leaders in Africa; to cultivate within [its] students the values of life-long learning, concern for others, and the courage to think in a bold and enterprising way." University Studies Abroad Consortium The Ghana program offers an opportunity for students to live and study in the heart of West Africa. Located in Accra, the University of Ghana offers courses taught in English in a variety of fields such as agriculture, dance, literature, philosophy and religion to name a few.
Overview Students live and study alongside native Ghanaians while experiencing the culture, learning about the country, and making local friends. Our staff in Ghana will also organize several excursions around Accra, which may include visiting some 300 miles of warm beaches, observing big game, bartering at the local market or attending a soccer match.

AHA International This program offers the opportunity to live and study in the city of Accra at a prestigious university, receive instruction in small classes, seminars, and tutorials from University of Ghana faculty members, choose the coursework you want from an almost limitless variety of disciplines and improve your writing and research skills.
Overview Students are directly enrolled in the undergraduate program at the University of Ghana. All classes are taught in English by university professors. Students typically take five courses, chosen from among twenty disciplines. Courses also are attended by Ghanaian undergraduate students.

AFS Intercultural Programs Summer The Summer Team Mission Program will place you with a host family in a regional or district capital while you volunteer at an orphanage helping out in various ways such as organizing activities, playing with the children, teaching basic writing and reading skills, and assisting with painting and updating the building. While traveling with your adult Team Leader, you can visit the historic Ashanti capital of Kumasi, the dungeons of Cape Coast and the Elmina castles to learn about their important historical connection to the American slave trade, and the Kakum National Park to enjoy a canopy walk. You will have the opportunity to learn traditional dances such as Adowa, Kpanlogo, and Borborbo and how to make fabrics such as batik.
Overview AFS-USA works toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.
Setting Ghana is one of the friendliest and most welcoming of West African nations. English is the official language; however, there are more than 52 native tongues and hundreds of dialects. Most Ghanaians live in small villages where society is very focused on the family and community. Shopping in concentrated in markets that offer everything from fruits to clothes to hairbraiding. At night, you’ll hear music everywhere in outdoor restaurants and clubs. And there are numerous festivals throughout the year that provide more life and color to an already vibrant culture. AFS Ghana will provide a 3-to 4-day orientation to teach you about Ghanaian society, ulture, family, school, religion, festivals, and safety. You’ll also be introduced to the native languages of Twi_and _Dagbani with six hours of lessons.

North Carolina State University The NC State program at the University of Ghana allows students the opportunity to enroll directly in courses at the University of Ghana for a semester or academic year. Overview All students are required to enroll in a Twi language class. Students may choose other offerings from the regular university curriculum, including humanities, performing arts, sciences, & social sciences.
