College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS) The semester program at the Galapagos Academic Institute for Arts & Sciences (GAIAS) offers students the opportunity to study ecology and biology with no knowledge of Spanish. The program consists of five intensive courses that are taught in three-week modules and worth 3 credits each.

Overview Sample courses include Human Ecology and Maritime Communities, Evolutionary Biology, Population Ecology, Introduction to Marine Life of the Galapagos, and Native and Introduced Plants of the Galapagos. All courses are taught in English.

Setting The University of San Francisco de Quito established GAIAS in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of Galapagos, on the island of San Cristobal. About 97% of the Galapagos Islands is a national park and has been named a World Heritage Site.

SEA Education Association Focusing on deep-water oceanographic studies, students undertake coursework ashore in oceanography, nautical science and maritime literature and history, followed by a practical component of hands-on marine science and blue-water sailing at sea.

Overview Students will receive a broad understanding of the world's oceans through an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines the sciences, social sciences, humanities and public policy.

Setting If you are looking for an educational adventure in a study-abroad program, you won't find anything like us anywhere in the world. We take college students to the deep ocean on a traditional sailing vessel to learn about the sea.

Overview A unique educational adventure set aboard traditionally rigged schooners while voyaging throughout the world's oceans. Based upon principles of experiential education, the primary academic foci of oceanography, marine biology, nautical science, and leadership are brought from the textbook into real life application.

Setting Dependent upon location. S/Y Ocean Star operates in the Caribbean Basin. S/Y Argo circumnavigates the globe over a two-year period. Voyage duration ranges from 20 to 90 days.

Galapagos Academic Institute for the Arts and Sciences Two ESL volunteers teachers needed for work in the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos Academic Institute for the Arts & Sciences (GAIAS) is currently seeking two experienced ESL teachers to volunteer at its community college in San Cristobal. Teachers receive free housing and a stipend which covers 2-3 meals per day in exchange for their services. The position runs from June 3 December 12, 2004 with the option to renew the contract. Minimum requirements: Applicants should be native speakers of English. They should have a BA in Education or other related field OR have a TESOL certificate plus two years of experience teaching ESL to adults. There is a minimum time commitment of six months. Rainforest and Reef Stam Zervanos, Ph.D. of Penn State University. Dr. Zervanos has taught courses in biodiversity, ecology, evolution, comparative animal and mammalian physiology at Penn State. His research has focused on physiological ecology, with an emphasis on thermoregulation, hibernation and biological rhythms in such diverse habitats as the deserts of Arizona, tundra of Alaska, coastal islands of the eastern U.S. and rainforests of South America.

Washington College The Washington College Summer Program in Ecuador for Environmental Studies is a three week program offered in conjunction with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito.

Overview The Summer program in Environmental Studies offers an expansive and comprehensive look at Ecuador's varied habitats, ecosystems and abundant flora and fauna. In addition to learning about wildlife in one of the most species-rich countries in the world, students will also gain an understanding of Ecuador's social and economic issues and the challenges it aces as a developing country while attempting to conserve its resources for future generations.
