Institute for Shipboard Education - Semester at Sea Administered by the nonprofit Institute for Shipboard Education, Semester at Sea® is a program that takes approximately 600 students--from colleges and universities across the United States and abroad--around the world each fall, spring and summer semester. The University of Virginia is the program's academic sponsor.

Overview Since 1963, over 45,000 students have studied and traveled to 60 countries around the world during fall and spring semesters through this program. A regional 65-day summer program also takes students to countries in the Pacific Rim, Latin America or Europe and the Mediterranean.

Setting Semester at Sea offers two voyages each year that circumnavigate the earth, and one that is more regional in focus. The fall terms typically begin in Ensenada, Mexico, and end in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, while the winter/spring terms generally begin in Nassau, Bahamas, and end in San Diego, California or Seattle, Washington. Our 65-day regional summer program takes students to countries within the Pacific Rim, Latin America or Europe and the Mediterranean.

Center for Cross Cultural Study Experience the blend of cultures - African, European and American - that form Cuba. Take classes from native Cuban faculty at the Universidad de La Habana and participate in an array of cultural activities and study trips designed to encourage direct interaction with the Cuban people. Students are lodged in university hotel. Earn up to 16 credits. Program licensed by the U.S. Government and sponsored by Willamette University.

Overview CC-CS and the Facultad de Artes y Letras (Liberal Arts College) of the University of Havana offer students a special selection of courses in Spanish language, Cuban society, the arts and popular cultures, political science, Cuban socialism, and Afro-Cuban studies. These courses have been specially designed to focus on themes and issues that address the particular needs of American students. Students who speak and understand Spanish at an advanced level may take one or two regular-session classes with Cuban students at the University of Havana.

Setting Experience the Caribbean walking along the Malecón seafront or buy local art at the open market in old Havana. Ride in a 1930’s era taxi to have a Mojito cocktail at the Bodeguita del Medio, one of Hemingway’s favorite hangouts. Tropical, sunny and lively, Havana’s jazz and salsa clubs are never far away. CC-CS led study tours are included at no extra cost.

Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University This is the first semester-long program at the Universidad de La Habana in which U.S. students are directly enrolled in regular university classes with Cuban students.

Overview The Universidad de La Habana gives students the opportunity enroll in regular semester courses. Students also live in regular university housing along with both Cuban and other international students.

Setting The Universidad de La Habana is the largest and oldest university in Cuba. It has approximately 6,000 degree students and has a high academic reputation in many parts of the world.

SEA Education Association Focusing on deep-water oceanographic studies, students undertake coursework ashore in oceanography, nautical science and maritime literature and history, followed by a practical component of hands-on marine science and blue-water sailing at sea.

Overview Students will receive a broad understanding of the world's oceans through an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines the sciences, social sciences, humanities and public policy.

Overview Living and learning in intentional community, studies will focus on historical and current practices of social revolution and political communism, the arts and music of Cuban culture, organic/sustainable agriculture, Spanish language, marine and subtropical ecology.

Setting Our travel around the island of Cuba may include self-supported bicycling, backpacking and/or motor vehicle travel.

Hampshire College Our Partners include UNEAC (National Association of Writer and Artists), The Office of the Historian, ICAIC (Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematograficos), CIPS (Center for the Investigation of Psychology and Sociology), ISA (Institute of Superior Arts), and TEMAS.

Overview Rather than focusing on the traditional classroom approach, students work in conjunction with their tutors in directed semester-long projects planned in coordination with a member of the Hampshire College faculty. Professor Carollee Bengelsdorf, an expert on Cuban matters, will be present in Havana to guide students in effectively developing their projects and will oversee the students progress. This program is tutorial based and culminates with an independent project. Students interested in Humanities and Arts, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences are best suited to this program.

Setting Housing is arranged for students in a family stay situation. Students can request to live independently or with other students. All housing options are centrally located in the Vedado neighborhood of Havana.

Value The cost of the program is equal to the cost of one full semester of tuition excluding room and board at Hampshire College. Students' basic living expenses, international transportation, and tuition while in Cuba are covered by the program.

Santa Barbara City College, Study Abroad Office SBCC will be offering a summer program in Cuba, a country that is within 90 miles of the shores of the US, but that has been visited by very few US citizens due to the existing travel restrictions.

Overview The intensive Spanish language program in Havana, Cuba, is a four-week program. Program participants will spend four weeks at the University of Havana, Cuba, studying Spanish language while learning about Cuban history, art and culture.

School for International Training The program emphasizes Cuba's unique cultural heritage, the formation of Cuban identity, and the centuries-old struggle for independence and autonomy. Your immersion into Cuban society in this vibrant urban setting, combined with educational excursions to rural areas and agricultural cooperatives, deepen your understanding of the cultural and environmental contrasts that make up the Cuban landscape.

Overview Intensive Language Study: Spanish; Culture, Identity, and Community Seminar: Introduction to the Cuban Revolution, Politics, Participation, and Development of the Cuban Revolution, Strategies and Problems of the Cuban Revolution, Social Development and Social Policies, Rural Development and Environment, Culture and Identity, Educational Excursions; Field Study Seminar; and Independent Study Project. (16 credits in total)

Setting Students reside in housing associated with the University of Havana. The program includes excursions around Havana to agricultural cooperatives, rural communities, educational and health centers, and areas of historical and literary significance. SIT is authorized to provide educational travel opportunities to U.S. citizens as permitted by the U.S. Treasury. Participants will be advised of up-to-date U.S. government restrictions on travel and recreational activities while in Cuba.

Value Please inquire for costs: Fees include tuition, full room and board, all field trips and related fares, health and accident insurance, and other direct program expenses. Participants pay for international airfare and domestic travel to the point of departure from the USA.
