Washburn Law School has offered a summer abroad program beginning in 1974. Washburn's program uses a comparative model and takes advantage of co-teaching by European and U.S. law professors, in addition to enrolling law students from the University of Utrecht. The goal is to provide students the opportunity to understand the U.S. legal system more fully through comparative study of other legal systems, while living in a stimulating European university environment.

A total of nine one-credit courses will be offered, consisting of one required introductory course, which takes place on Monday and Tuesday of the first week, followed by four elective courses in each of the two-week sessions that follow. The introductory course will be a survey of the basic principles and institutions of international criminal law and human rights, and the elective courses will be devoted to specific topics in these fields, as described below. The courses will be taught by faculty drawn from universities and private practice in both the United States and Europe, all of whom are recognized as leading experts in their respective fields. Amsterdam, with a history of studies in international criminal law dating back to the 16th Century, is an ideal location for the study of these two important international law subjects. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), The International Court of Justice (ICJ), and the newly created International Criminal Court (ICC) are just a short distance away, at The Hague. Arrangements have been made for a visit to these courts, and to have representatives from the tribunals visit to lecture on their work.
