Program Description:
This Summer 2012 Special Topic course course is meant to act as an introduction to international library perspectives with a focus on digital librarianship in China. In a broad sense the course will provide students with practical experience alongside library professionals. Program participants will also be exposed to current applications used for various library services and resource sharing in China.

Through their own observations, it is hoped that students will realize how the professional activities of digital librarians relate to matters of international interest. Students will have the opportunity to meet international information and library professionals, acquire practical knowledge of the technical aspects of database construction and develop additional professional competences. Furthermore, this practicum will provide students with one of the finest educational experiences of outreach to the international library community available.

This summer program is designed for students interested in exploring the differences and commonalities between digital library systems. The main emphasis of the course will be on understanding current practices of digital libraries in Mainland China. The course is also meant to act as a case study on how the operation, maintenance and development of another country’s digital library system is affected by its own culture and economy.
Setting Description:
The class will be held in Beijing Information Science & Technology University. Students will have an opportunity to visit the National Library and its Digital Library of China Project. This is a course for both graduate & undergraduate students, no pre-requisites. The program cost includes 3-credits of SCSU's tuition, round-trip shuttle service between SCSU and JFK airport, one round-trip airfare to Beijing, room, daily breakfast at the hotel, travel in Beijing, and all necessary fees and tickets for various library tours, cultural activities, and scenic tours.
